I am in Bethesda, zoned residential, and wish to keep a couple of hens in a backyard coop. Where can I check local regulations?
Thanks. |
Easily google-able https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DPS/Process/zspe/Chickens.html |
| There are a lot of people breaking that rule. |
| Chickens can be pets |
You can submit a complaint here- https://permittingservices.montgomerycountymd.gov/DPS/online/eComplaint.aspx Not sure if it would make a difference right now. |
Thank you! |

ZONING INFORMATION
The zoning ordinance does not prohibit the keeping of chickens; however, 59.3.2.9.B.2 does prohibit Roosters. The zoning ordinance does regulate placement of chicken coops: In Montgomery County any accessory building or structure used for the housing, shelter, or sale of animals or fowl other than a household pet must be a minimum of 25' from a lot line and a minimum of 100' from a dwelling on another lot. The structure must be in the rear yard. Be sure to check with Animal Control regarding regulations as it pertains to chickens. |
I’m certain the chicken-police are a top priority at the moment.
|
| Many HOAs restrict them as well. |
| Oh lordy. Please don't, seriously. Chickens stink. |

FYI Prince William County, VA residents - you may own 10 chickens, or one ostrich.

| Are you sure you want your neighbors wake up at 5:30-6 every day and complain on you? |
| We have neighbors in McLean, Va who keep chickens. Fairfax county laws mandate a certain number of acres to allow chickens on the property. |
You can get a special permit.

| Chicken feed can attract rodents. Just something to think about. |
