Parents, step it up already!

I am amazed how many parents are completely disengaged with this online schooling. So many posts here complaining, but most of it has to do with the parents at this point and not the teachers. The last few days only a handful of kids are handing in the work to the teacher on time. Once again today, a class was review for all the kids who aren't submitting anything. Teachers are sending emails directly too. But you need to go onto your parent portal and spend maybe 10 MINUTES a day with your child to review what needs to be done for the following day. I am working FT at home and my husband is essential. We have 4 kids and 3 in public school right now. Just going onto the portal, checking a few emails, and maybe listening in a bit on one class here and there is all that is needed.

And the kids unmuting over and over again and wasting time need to be permanently banned for multiple days. This has so much potential, but the teachers need the parents to step it up. So do the kids. It is not that hard.

How do you, a parent, know which kids have turned in their work?

My kids have done theirs, but the idea of a random parent playing hall monitor and checking off which kids submitted their assignments baffles me.

I love how the narrative on DCUM has gone from 'THE TEACHERS NEED TO DO MORE TO MEET MY CHILD'S NEEDS' to 'OMG HOW DO I OPT OUT OF HAVING TO HELP MY KID!?!?!?'

I'm not the OP but today our kid's teacher read off the names of the 1/3 of kids who turned in their assignment. We had turned in the assignment but it actually irritated me because at this age kids need the parents technical know-how in order to actually do the work.

I feel grateful that my youngest is in a CES where everyone does their work, and that my other kid is in high school with no live classes. We don’t need to deal with the nonsense you describe.

I wish teachers would simply email me what they are assigning my kids so I would be informed about what they should be doing. The whole parent portal thing is stupid. Just email me.

Oh that’s terrible. At my school that would be a list of the 1/3 richest part of the class. You should speak up.

In my son’s class a kid hasn’t done the work because his mom was confused (he said). The teacher was great - we are all learning new things, all in this together, we can try again with the next assignment.

We get a weekly email and it is key. Feel free to ask for it!

I don’t hound my kids about turning in assignments during “regular” school, and I ain’t gonna start now.

It amazes me that so much of DCUM talks about their brilliant 99%ile kids, yet they can’t even manage to turn in their work.

Depends on their age and if they have ADHD (lack organizational skills). What makes me crazy is the multiple platforms. All information should be in one place, instead of the kids having to go all over the place to figure out what is expected.

The parent portal works fine, if you look.

OP how about you worry about your 3 and stop lecturing the rest of us. My kid turns in everything on time, but I have NO idea what happens in the other households. The last thing I want to do is assume that everyone has the same resources and capabilities that I do. Even with 3 and your husband being essential you clearly have what you need. Be thankful and shut up.

More work for teachers? Not necessary. Take a couple minutes to look at the app.
