Austria requires wearing mask to grocery store. Where are our masks?

Anonymous
Reading headlines from around the world by googling masks it seems other countries are obtaining millions of masks. How does Austria have enough for people to wear to the grocery store (which is a great obvious idea!) yet we don’t have enough for our medical staff? Israel obtained 10 million masks. How did they get so many for such a smaller country? China has them for all its citizens to wear. It seems Jared K oversaw a flight of medical supplies to New York. Are we going to get more? We are clearly falling behind other countries. Now there are hotspots spreading everywhere in the US. Are other areas going to get more supplies? Why can’t the US get more masks and ventilators for the entire country?

Austria has a population of 8 million, just like NYC.

They bought the masks from Germany, and they shipment was stopped by the German government before it was finally allowed through.

They are regular masks, not n95

They have the EU. It’s essentially no different than a different state shipping masks to NY.

Any mask is better than no mask, remember that droplets come from the mouth merely from speaking to someone else. Think “Say it, don’t spray it”. Cover your nose and mouth anytime you are interacting. We don’t yet know who has no symptoms but is a carrier vs. who is carrying the virus but not yet greatly ill but highly contagious.

Because their centralized government was paying attention and ordered some. We have no such thing here and states are scrambling to get enough supplies fo the medical staff.

Surgical masks and homemade masks serve about the same purpose. Everyone can make their own if they want one.

Our hospitals have plenty of regular surgical masks. They want the n95 masks.

If they had plenty then the our government would be requiring people to wear them to our grocery stores and handing them out to everyone. Meanwhile around the country no one has them.

Where did Israel get 10 million masks? That is a lot of masks. We don’t seem to be having the same luck.

No they don't. I keep hearing please from local and not so local nurses who are not getting enough surgical masks per shift. So they have to keep rewearing them.

Yep or tie a bandana around your face. It is not airborne.

I just went grocery shopping early today and I wore a mask that my mom made me. She used the Deaconess hospital pattern that is online.

My nurse friend at a dc hospital reports only getting one n95 per shift. Hasn’t mentioned surgical masks as they aren’t really using them because thy don’t believe they’re protective enough. They’d rather wear one n95 than many surgical.
