doctors note to get out of a gym contract

Anonymous
No idea where to post this.

I (stupidly) signed an 18 month gym contract. 3 months into it and I’m over it. I need a new gym/routine.

I don’t have the contract in front of me now. My friend said you can get out of any contract with a doctors note.

I’m going to the doctor this week and I guess I’ll ask for a note...? Saying what I’m not sure but I like the doctor and I think he’ll write it.

Will the gym accept it and let me go? Or will I have to pay hefty fees?

Probably depends on the gym, but for the people I know who have done this (for legitimate reasons—surgery, etc), it was only for a period of time. I don’t know of any medical condition that requires a 15 month break from a gym.

Read the fine print and see how the doctor's note can help, otherwise you don't get out of it.

Honestly, OP... perhaps you should learn from this lesson, instead of trying to get out of your obligations.

Let’s say I joined cross fit. I didn’t but it’s a somewhat similar gym. I’m hoping for an dismissal because I need a more gentle gym. Honestly legitimate; I’m not fit enough for this. I was stupid to sign up.

I’ve learned. Now I don’t want to pay $X every month for the next 15 months.

Injury from working out over your ability? Can’t use the gym if you are injured and have to recover / rehab.

No, the lesson is that you can pursue your health and fitness goals in that gym until the end of your contract.

See? Still haven't learned.

Tell the gym you’re moving out of the area.

You're really going to ask your doctor to basically make up a medical reason why you cannot attend your gym for the next 15 months? And you say you LIKE your doctor? Why would you put them in such an awkward position by making an appointment and asking them to commit fraud on their license?

Omg so awkward would never work. It’s not dc; I’m in a small town now!

Yup, this. Tell them you are moving overseas for work.

It’s truly not a lie. I joined this super intense gym and it’s too hard for me. It’s causing pain to some scar tissue. And more. I didn’t know it would be a problem and the “check with a physician before you exercise” didn’t help because it only hurts NOW.

Then get your facts straight. Is there a legitimate medical reason or is there not? The way you started this thread, it seems you're making this up as you go.

Sorry, I guess I should’ve written in the OP that I do have legitimate medical concerns about this gym regime. And I’ll tell the doctor that.

Fine print in the contract, OP. Read it. You can try the MD note and will likely have to pay a hefty cancellation fee.
