I don’t think it’s Crohn’s because Crohn’s is usually diagnosed in early adulthood, not at age 40+. I want to believe that if Kate had Crohn’s she would make it one of her charity issues instead of keeping it secret. I say this as a Crohn’s sufferer who is trying to bring more awareness to the disease in order to get more funding to find a cure, because right now we are stuck with the best treatment being a massively expensive (for now) and relatively dangerous medication. But of course Crohn’s sufferers have zero obligation to disclose because people are stupidly immature about the disease, and everyone has a right to health privacy.

And yes I know this is highly speculative!

I will add that not all Crohn’s sufferers consistently have diarrhea. I rarely do. My symptoms are abdominal pain and the occasional bowel obstruction. And I look completely fine and always have. Except for one point where I had a perforation Crohn’s has never made me look sick.

She may be more private about it, for whatever reason. I chose to be outspoken after my colon cancer because I felt like my story could help friends and family to avoid what led to my scary situation. But I easily could have gone the other way and kept it to myself because what is going on with your colon is not always an easy topic to discuss.

It would be nice if she made it her cause or whatever (if she actually has a bowel disease) but she’s human with her own feelings about what she wants to share publicly.

It feels like the bowel and bladder issues are the last bastion of things people won't talk about. People were hush hush like this about breast cancer in the past.

True and I think this will change over the years, especially with bowel. IBDs are on the rise, IBS is common and colon cancer among the young is on the rise. I am already seeing more articles on IBDs and on what your poop tells you about health, looking for blood in stool, constipation and the gut microbiome. Our comfort level with these things is increasing and if she does have an IBD and discloses it, I think she will help normalize speaking about these issues.

You are right about all of this, and if this is the case, she absolutely would be a great person to normalize discussions. I'm sure that will be part of a PR discussion once she is well enough.

This might be a little inside baseball for this forum but is the guy in the SUV on the right Christian Jones?

I think so too, but I don’t think Kate Middleton could’ve kept up with all of her appearances so far if she had ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Aren’t those conditions so painful they are debilitating?

Even if she had IBS or untreated Celiac disease, I’m telling you that someone in the public would have noticed she was running to the ladies room all the time.

This had to be relatively sudden onset is my guess. Is there any chance it could have been complications from appendicitis?

1. A lot of her photos are very heavily edited so it wouldn’t be that hard to make her look healthy
2. Her appearances are all relatively short and if her UC or Crohn’s was previously well managed by something like humira she might not need to dash away that frequently.

Super interesting. If this is true, it certainly could be UC or Crohn’s.

I also just learned that risk for hyperemesis gravidarum is passed from mother to daughter. And having a mother who had HG places you at greater risk for UC, Crohn’s, and inflammatory bowel disease in general. So, it’s all at least loosely related.

Hope she gets better soon! Can’t be any fun.

Wow, I'd never heard that about a hyperemesis / IBD link...I'm the month hospital stay Crohn's PP and I had HG with both pregnancies. I'm not sure HG was a diagnosis back then, but I know my mom sick enough when pregnant with me that she went back to live with her parents for a few months.

Apparently, there is.

1) Offspring of pregnancies complicated by HG are at risk for IBD
2) If your sister had HG, you are 17 times more likely to have HG during pregnancy. If your mother had HG with two pregnancies, you are at 27-fold risk

Hope you get better soon!

Wrong. Crohns is often diagnosed in late teens early adulthood, but ALSO now often first diagnosed in middle age and it's on the rise.

Nope I am not wrong. I said it is usually diagnosed in early adulthood. I have Crohn’s I promise I’m knowledgeable about these things.

interesting. I know my mom was very sick with me, and I also suffered from horrible illness during pregnancy. I have had multiple digestive system issues - no longterm bowel disease diagnosed, but I am the poster who had a cancerous tumor removed from my colon.

My poor daughters (yes, I know they need to start monitoring 10 years before my year of diagnosis)

Looks like him. And I think he’s still close friends with them.

It does look like him. At the time he left it was said he would continue to advise them privately. So, what would your conclusion be, CJ PP, if he was at the hospital?

Nothing there to tuck.

She's had multiple pregnancies. Even though she's thin, I'm sure she has plenty of loose skin.

The plastic surgery or "injury" crowd seem a bit far afield.

What digestive-related surgery would possibly require that long of a hospital stay and recovery?

Colon resection can be required for a variety of reasons. Hospital stay and recovery from that surgery can be 2 weeks for a variety of reasons.

Agree that was my first thought. She could have an colo/ileostomy may be temporary or permanent depending. She could have severe diverticulitis/osis, colitis, etc. This could require an extended hospital stay, not usually 14 days or whatever they’re saying though. That’s almost unheard of with any surgery.

Nobody wants to be out hugging strangers and greeting crowds with an ostomy bag.

My friend’s husband had one for a long time and was very sensitive about the smell of it.

That is a little weird because they don't smell...

From med sites:

Your pouch may release an odor that's noticeable to others if there's a leak or if you eat foods that cause a lot of smelly gas that can't be filtered.

You will also notice smell when changing or emptying the pouch.

Yes, but in general, they don't smell or leak. They're not noticeable under clothes. It takes less than 5 minutes to change a pouch. I've had lots of patients with a stoma and a bag and it's just not that big of a deal.
To you.

Did you ask them?

My aunt was so embarrassed by hers that she stopped socializing in old age. Don’t assume that you know how it feels to be a patient.

I do ask them. It's a big change, but most patients adapt and don't continue to struggle. If they are continuing to struggle, therapy is recommended. I'm sorry for your aunt, but that's not normal and she probably should have gone to therapy.

Even if she did, that would be the simplest outpatient procedure. Even a muscle repair to correct DR (which she doesn't appear to have, just looking at her) would be an outpatient procedure.

All too common these days. Hopefully she uses this as a platform to raise awareness for 15.24 meter parasites.

I mean, that's about the only thing that could legitimately require a 10-14-day hospital stay.

I have a hunch that royals are welcome to stay in the hospital, and pampered there, for much longer than us American plebes. But maybe a Brit who uses private healthcare services across the pond can weigh in.

This is so stupid. Royals can, and have, set up entire hospital suites in their giant palaces and castles. The only reason she's in that long, assuming they're not lying, is because she needs ICU access.

I agree with PPs that the most likely thing is something colon or bowel related and that is scary.

But I also can't help but think the timing and way the PR is calculated is absolutely leveraged to distract from Prince Andrew.

Why would they NOT want to do that?

DP but Christian Jones was PR for William and Kate, then briefly worked for MM when she started royal work. Christian was accused of funneling stories about Harry and MM through his boyfriend to Dan Wootton for $$. Wootton is a reporter who lost his tabloid job when this story broke, and he also lost his tv gig for another offense at the same time. There’s some other blackmail accusations for Wootton, he’s objectively not a good person.

A while back Christian Jones was cleared of wrongdoing in a palace inquiry, saying Christian didn’t know Dan. But investigative journalists found pictures of Dan and Christian hanging out. (Source https://bylinetimes.com/2023/12/09/in-plain-sight-the-picture-the-palace-probe-missed/)

Anyway, it was announced that Christian left the firm in 2021, which would have quieted any of this discussion at the time. But if he’s accompanying William to visit Kate on a work day, obviously he’s back in the fold. Shady!
