How to color just a few individual grey hairs?

Anonymous
What product and brand should I use to color a few grey hairs?

My hair is dark, so each grey hair stands out. I’ve never colored my hair before. TIA!

If you aren’t worried about dimension, you can just apply a dye only product to those strands using gloves fingers. Let process for 30 min and rinse.

How many are you talking about? For a few, I would just pluck them, honestly.

+1 for pulling them out.
You would have to dye them every 3 weeks to keep them covered.

Not OP, but I have the same problem. What specific product are you talking about ? Can you give some examples. Thanks.

What about that hair mascara stuff?

I use a semi-permanent "glaze" at the salon. It fades out over time, so you don't get the skunk stripe down the part. It goes from a mostly solid color, to looking like highlights, back to grays again.

This works. When you get to the point of plucking being too much, the hair mascara works great. Brush it on and dab off any excess just like you would on your eye lashes.

Clairol root touch up

Hair products made specifically for covering gray roots between colorings.

They come in sprays, I think.

Op here. Will the hair dye on just a few strands of hair get on the rest of my hair? For example, when I wash my hair?

Even if it did, what would be the concern if it’s all the same color?

I color a small patch of hair at home. I found a tone that closely matched my natural color and follow the directions, dying just one small strand. Its just a drugstore brand - I think Revlon Colorsilk. I dont think the brand matters, just find a color that matches your natural color the closest. I section my hair off using clips and ponytail holders so I am isolating just the gray strand and dye from root to tip. I use my bathroom sink, follow the directions, and from beginning to end it takes less than 30 minutes. I watch TV/ read while the dye is processing. It is really easy. Keep some makeup wipes on hand. My grays are close to my face, so I always wipe my forehead immediately after applying dye to ensure that I dont have any on my face that will show up as the color processes.

I used to get my whole head done every five weeks just to manage this small strand of hair, but the stylist could never nail my natural hair color perfectly so I stopped three years ago and never looked back. I've saved over $6,000 and I prefer the outcome. Eventually the gray will spread and I'll be in the salon chair, but I am putting it off as long as possible.

Bump
I have about 30-40 strands of hair going grey on each side. I am mid 40s and I have black hair. It’s finally starting to bug me to the point I’m considering home L’Oréal type of root touch up kits, henna type of more natural dyes or highlights at the salon. My only hesitation with highlights is I don’t want to go more than once every 2-3 months so it might look worse in between.

What would people start out with or would recommend in my case?
