Is there an age when being thin looks bad?

Is there a point when being skinny just makes you look older?

I'm 44 years old, never had kids, and the same size and weight I was when 18 (probably helped by not having kids). I run, I lift weights, do Pilates and I'm in good shape, but I feel like what once looked sexy and fit now looks gaunt. I see other women with more plumpness, especially in their face, look more youthful and pleasant and attractive. Could gaining some weight be better for ones appearance as we age, if you go from say, the low range of normal to the middle range of normal weight?

No.

Yes. In my case. I could stand to gain a few pounds. And I was always chubby. Now is wish I had a little meat on my bones. My butt and my face. But as I’ve gotten older. Early 50’s I’ve lost my appetite. It’s hard to keep weight on

Yes. I think Lauren Bacall said you either gain a few pounds or look old.

The extra weight--a little--smooths out wrinkles.

I have trouble gaining weight.

Are you asking for permission? Sure, the universal age is 44. Get to the pizza eating!

On the beauty and fashion board they're regularly talking about how at a certain age you have to choose between your face and your ass.

Absolutely. I know a couple 40ish moms at my pool who are very slim and look good in their swim suits, but their faces look haggard. The slightly plump women have more youthful faces.

Yes, about 5-10 lbs would probably help. I work around some women who obsess over being thin and eating low cal but would do better to add an extra meal per day.

Not at your age. I am 47 and best at a lower weight but I do have a face that remains full. Maybe if you are more prone to a long or horse face.

Depends on how 'thin' you are?

If its just exercise causing your thinness, and not bulimia and smoking, then I think it looks great.

But if its negative influences I think it can veer into Kathy Griffin or Kathie Lee Gifford territory easily. Your face and skin will look old and weathered. Wrinkles will be deep and cavernous (even with fillers). You just look worn out.

Whenever I get really lean and happy with my body, my face starts looking emaciated and it definitely makes me look older too. It sucks, but the choice between a** and face is real for me.

I think so. I've seen several 40s/50s overweight women get lapband and lose a ton of weight. They looked better before the procedure... The body is ok but the face is gaunt.

Better than being obese with knee and heart problems.

OP, see if fillers will help. If you're losing fullness in certain places fillers can be a godsend. In others, not so much. Getting a consult couldn't hurt, and if you try them and hate them, you can always have them dissolved. Also try hyaluronic acid. http://ha5.skinmedica.com
