Can an air purifier deal with flatulence?

Anonymous
Getting desperate for a solution that doesn't involve never breathing through my nose in the bedroom.

Uhh….get a different partner?

No, it can’t.

The offensive aromatic elements in flatulence is composed of sulphur dioxide, a gas. Mechanical, UV, or electrostatic air purifier are designed to deal with suspended solids in the air, such as dust, mites, spores, and other such particles. They do nothing to change or filter out gasses themselves. You need a catalytic or chemical filter for that.

That's disappointing.

What about a product like this? It sounds like a chemical filter, but maybe that's just marketing-speak?

"'Molekule comes with two filters: A Pre-Filter and a PECO-Filter. The Pre-Filter captures larger particles like dust and pet hair and slows down VOCs on their way to the PECO-Filter. The PECO-Filter is coated with our proprietary catalyst that breaks down VOCs, bacteria, viruses, and other pollutants at a molecular level when activated by light."

Dyson also says its air purifiers "capture gases" - not true?

I'm not challenging you, just hoping to find a miracle product!

“Activated by light” = UV light source, kills mites, spores, molds and fungi.

Doesn’t convert sulphur dioxide into another compound, therefore doesn’t remove it.

Using activated charcoal, which is composed of carbon compounds arranged a porous structure, that creates what is essentially a “sticky” surface, molecularly-speaking. It will capture some, and hold it there like a fly stuck on flypaper, but most blows right on by it.

Dilution in the air is the best way to disperse sulphur dioxide. Or treat it with ozone, which will eliminate it, but at the expense of being a powerful, and dangerous, method. I wouldn’t want to be breathing in an oxidant gas like oxone all night, every night. No thanks. I’ll take th sulphur dioxide, which is harmless in the ppm numbers found in farts.

Surprised no one mentioned - why the farting? Is there a food related (most likely) or medical reason? Make him/her take Gas-X?

You need an air purifier with several pounds of a activated carbon/charcoal. A regular one that just filters out particles (pollen dander etc) won't block smells. Check out the Austin air healthmate series.

there are supplements the farter can take to help--charcoal tablets, chlorophyll etc. I'd start there. Change of diet can help too.

This thread makes me laugh.

something is making the farter fart .. you need to eliminate that out of farter's diet

Everybody is a farter

My guess is that he’s lactose intolerant and doesn’t realize this. It took a while for my husband to figure this out.
