Decorating the tree

I love decorating the tree...it's like my canvas. We do a different color scheme each year. Last year, we went funky with purple, pink and gold. Before that it was an American theme tree.

This year it is white and silver with tons of glass ornaments and tear drop prisms refracting the white lights. White roses in all the nooks, silver beads and puffy, white/silver iridescent bows. It looks like a wedding Christmas tree. All it needs is some fake snow and a train under it.

What does yours look like?

Wow, that's really cool! Do you buy a whole bunch of new ornaments each year to do that? If so, do you now have a gazillion now piled up in the basement?

Mine's just a regular tree with jewel toned ornaments and garlands. I'd like to do a gold and white themed tree some day.

My mother has several trees around the house. My favorite of hers has lots of white sea shell ornaments all over.

I went with the traditional, since that's what I grew up with and what I find relaxing and comforting.

So for me it's:

White lights.
Red and gold glass/metallic sheen ornaments.
And this year, we'll start to add ornaments that our daughter makes.

We have faux fir (haha) garland around the fireplace mantle and down the stair railing, with white lights and a red bows.

We have three white candles in our front windows.

Outside I have a green wreath with a red bow on the door. I'll put red bows on the sconces, and when my wreates arrive, will place them on the fence with white lights.

Your basic, traditional decorations.

We decorate ours with almost 1000 multicolored lights. When we travel, we buy ornaments. Also, each year, I buy each kid one that reminds me of them. That is what goes on the tree. My kids, including the 2 year old, put all of the ornaments on and I have to say that I am surprised that the only time we ever broke one was when I was packing them up two years ago.

Ooh I like the sea shell idea. I'll do that one day. I've had all the regular colors for years...I just mix and match. I usually just buy new ribbon. But I did have to go all out for the funky tree...I didn't have any pink/purple decor until last year. That was the funniest tree ever. It had a George Clinton/Cat Williams vibe to it.

Seriously, if you do a different color scheme/theme every year, what do you do with all the decorations? I love the idea, but I can't imagine buying new stuff for the tree every year, and we already have so much Christmas stuff I also can't imagine storing it all.

Our tree definitely does not have a theme or even a color scheme. We do white lights; red, green and gold glass balls; and lots of Waterford crystal keepsake ornaments, but when we add in all the kids' ornaments, which are all shapes, sizes and colors, it certainly does not look like a "department store" Christmas tree, but it's very homey!

Mine is decoration-less on the bottom 2 feet. Because I have a 2 YO Who likes to steal the ornaments and scamper away.

I don't buy a whole new set every year, only last year for the funky tree because I felt like doing something totally different. I have sets of all the traditional colors accumulated from birth until now....hand me downs, gifts, ornaments from the Philippines, ornaments we've made. I just don't use all of it and stick to 2 or 3 colors.

I don't even know where all the white roses came from this year...I think one of my husband's clients moved out and gave us a box of fake flowers. So I made use of them. All I had to buy is the ribbon.
