I recently came across the RideSafer vest that can be used instead of a car seat for kids age 3 and up. I'm interested, and wondering if anyone here has any experience with it? Here's the website ...

Car seats for the littles says “One nerve-wracking cab ride with this kiddo in the vest was enough to prove that we cannot recommend the Ride Safer Travel Vest for children younger than 5 years old.”
Probably fine for occasional use after 5. |
We have one. I don’t love it. I bring it in case I cannot get an Uber with a car seat. My youngest is almost 5. |
I used it frequently for Ubers and cabs between about 3.5-5. Never really liked it - it never situated the lap belt correctly. That said, I preferred it to the Mifold and Bubblebum, both of which slid around so much as to be useless. By 5 I looked into the research and decided that my (tall) DS was better off in a seatbelt alone in the middle seat for cab rides, instead of in some weird little-used device. |
We bought it for vacations when we were taking cabs or tour vans. I think our kid was about 4. She wasn’t crazy about it so we didn’t use it a lot but I thought it looked pretty safe—definitely safer than a regular seat belt for cab situations. We also had the bubble bum and I never thought that looked particuLarly safe. |
We use it for vacations. I would consider it for carpooling if you have a tiny, tiny car and need something for the middle seat. I would not use it for daily commuting use because it takes awhile to get it on. |
To add, for traveling I meant when flying so we didn't have to bring a carseat on the plane to use at our destination. It worked brilliantly for this purpose. |
If you used the the little seatbelt guides on the side of the bubblebum it wouldnt have slid around. Bubblebum is better than this imo but kid has to be over 40lbs. ( And you have to use it correctly) |
I've been using it for ubers since my child was 3 (5 now). It works great for that. I wouldn't use it for long car rides though. My child would be all over the car looking out every window like a dog - while still strapped in - w/o me next to them in the back. |
+1 We prefer bubblebum. |
To me, safety is number one priority. I think it may be a good replacement for a booster in terms of safety and convenience, but would not be a good replacement for a conventional car seat since I don't see it as being safer than a car seat. However, of course, if the only feasible alternative is a booster, this would be the better option. |
For travel we use the bubblebum in combo with the ridesafer. Ride Safe actually makes a booster they have tested with the vest - but it's bulkier and unnecessarily expensive. So the bubblebum works well, and for our kid, helps with getting the belts adjusted properly. |
