wall hooks to hold relatively heavy items (full backpacks). Stud needed or drywall is OK?

You either need to screw into the stud or use a molly bolt.

It’s one thing if it was a stationary picture. But your kids will be lifting and dropping a 30-40 lb bag onto hook. So forces may exceed 50 lb depending on how they toss it on

If you want multiple hooks, you can mount them on some sort of backing board that's nice looking and then attach that board to the studs wherever they may fall. That way your hooks can be evenly spaced.

I did one like above but did an over the door version to make it removable. It stays in our mud room so it doesn’t look bad.

Toggle bolt would work but a stud would be better, I agree with PP about kids dropping backpacks on to them. It's not like hanging a piece of art, there's going to be all kinds of torque and movement on the hooks.

Believe it or not, these command hooks hold my kids' backpacks (high school kids, so very heavy with books etc).

May not be the aesthetic you're looking for - we put them on the inside of our coat closet door - but you avoid the drywall issues.

Hook rails look nice, but many are not rated to 50 lbs, so definitely check.

That is because they are designed to go into drywall, not studs. If you are able to line up the screw holes with studs they'll hold whatever you need them to hold. But if the screw holes don't match up with where your studs are...you need dry wall anchors, and then you should only use them for lighter duty.

Um this isn't true. Maybe if you buy something flimsy and mount it with drywall anchors, but if you mount a 1x4 board to the studs and then drill/screw in proper pegs to that it will definitely hold a backpack. It would be just as strong as screwing a hook into the studs.
