Pick up truck in nova/dc

Anonymous
I have a large expedition that was a challenge to fit in may garages (especially crystal city).

It is dying and I am thinking of going with a pickup. Typically clearance is not a problem- but width and turning is.
Is my only option a Toyota Tacoma? With 4 doors the bed is so small I am not sure it would carry more than my expedition.

Any recommendations for a good size truck that can make it parking garages? Need 4wd.

Thanks!

My Expedition is the same as DHs F150. The only difference is my bed is covered and has seats.

What are you carrying in the back that you need a bed and 4WD?

A minivan can carry quite a bit and handles well in the city/parking garages.

Assuming you're a guy, you just need to get over yourself and the "need" for a big truck. Minivans are also safer in case you hit someone.

I would not go with a pickup unless there is a special work or hobby reason you need it in the DC area.

no one "needs" a car. you can walk, bike, take public transportation use uber. ect.

I didn't need my hybrid, I could have gotten a smartfor2. my wife did not need a subaru forester. I don't need to eat steak...or drink beer.

we don't need anything OP want a truck. don't be so fcking judgmental.

OP the biggest issue with truck is the crappy turning radius. Id start your search there. what about the new jeep gladiator. i thing the 4wd is going to be a killer for the turning radius.

good luck enjoy

+1. We own a Silverado, but DH has a hobby/side thing that he loves that requires it. But DH also has a sedan for everyday commuting into the city.

An expedition isn't particularly capacious due to the high floor, especially if you are using all three rows of seats. Whenever we go on road trips and we rent an Expedition for our party of six, I am struck by how little space we get in exchange for the huge external dimensions.

I am a car nut, so I love the chance to drive something a little giddy, but it's obvious our Odyssey has more cargo-carrying capability than an Expedition.

If carrying capacity is your goal, a good van is where it's at. My friend has a Tacoma for towing a camper, it's not going to be a substitute for your expedition. If you've never lived with a pickup truck before, the open bed takes getting use to.

+1 on the last part. I'm the Silverado owner, but I've also had a lot of experience with my mom's Pacifica. If you are loading and unloading stuff, it WAY easier on your back to be loading stuff in and out of the back of a van than it is to be putting up the cover on a truck bed (assuming you have a cover), loading the bed of the truck, etc.

I will also add that if you have passengers, getting in and out of a large pickup, which is already a wide vehicle, with it's big doors, is hard if you don't want to bang up the car next to you. Minivans have sliding doors and are just easier to get in and out of.

My DH has a Tacoma. I don't love it, but he likes it for hauling stuff to the dump, picking up mulch and stuff from Home Depot, moving furniture, etc. I admit that it does come in handy at times.

We have the 4 door with the long bed. So it holds a lot, but it is very long. I don't know how it would do in Crystal City garages, but I've parked it in a few DC garages. It can be tight and I can't use all exits because of the height. Parking is probably my least favorite aspect of driving it. Otherwise it feels like an SUV in the cab and is pretty comfortable.

We got a cover (Tonneau?) in order to lock things securely in the bed. The cover has reached the end of its useful life so I think we may get one of those camper tops next.

Thanks for the replies.

I have owned a Toyota pick up and the turning radius does suck.
My friend has dodge 1500 and some valets in dc have said no, so maybe f150 may be smaller and work better for dc

An F150 is exactly the same size as a Ram 1500.

actually the ram is a few inches wider and taller than the ford, but has a better turning radius

2019 Ford F-150 width is 79.80”

2019 Ram 1500 width is 79.40”

What are you hauling and why do you need four doors? There are three small pickup on the market-Ranger, Tacoma and forgot the last one. Getting 4 door or extended cab defeats the purpose of getting the small truck.

A Tacoma is the perfect pick up for dc, even the long bed. My husband has one. Prior to that he had an F150 and it was a challenge in parking garages and tight streets.
The Tacoma holds it's value
