Painting Concrete Porch/Steps: yay or nay?

Anonymous
Painting our house and just patched concrete porch and steps, the patch is a darker concrete, and the porch/steps were never painted previously- should we paint, and if so, what color - main color (deep blue) or trim color (light turquoise?)

No, no, heck no. don't paint the concrete

Paint it the color of the concrete so that it does not look patchy. Do not paint in any other color because it will be a lot of maintainence.

Mine was painted to prep the house for market and now I'm going to have to repaint it forever or figure out how to get it off.

I have been watching the free curb appeal episodes on the hgtv app on roku. Season 25 and 26 are the best. Definitely paint the concrete! It makes a huge difference! Just do it correctly with cleaning the concrete first. Possible acid etching the concrete and then painting or using a acid wash to stain it.

A lot of time people don't take the time to prep correctly or use the wrong product, and then you get maintenance problems.

We had a concrete coating applied professionally to our concrete porches. It looks really nice.

It wasn't cheap though. You could call and get an estimate.

No, stain it. Paint will peel.

I painted top step/porch area 2 months ago before listing our house. Looks great and I was really worried it would look tacky but it doesn’t at all.

Are you sure the patch will hold?

Cover with Stone

We had very patchy steps. We had a reputable contractor recoat all of our steps (a thin layer of concrete that bonds to the existing concrete). Our neighbor had it done a few years ago and it's holding up great. Our contractor also sealed the new coat of concrete with a product called Ardex - it's a light grey and it looks fantastic. He swears it will not chip off like paint. Time will tell but in the meantime, we've gotten a lot of compliments at how well our stairs look now!

the patch will probably lighten up, give it some time. It's still "green" concrete.

You can get concrete stains in many different colors now, this turquoise one is pretty: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Eagle-1-gal-Aquamarine-Interior-Exterior-Acid-Stain-EDADQ/203012916

Painting concrete looks nice. They sell a lot of concrete paint at Home Depot. Obviously covering it with stone is a great look but that's a lot more money.
