Looking for a cheap phone for my 6th grader, along with a cheap prepaid service. This is for talk/text only, no data on the phone.
So far, I’m only finding phones where you have to have a monthly plan. Does anyone still offer prepaid cards where you buy a bunch of minutes and text messages, the spend them down for the year? By the way, Verizon wanted $30/month as an add-on to our family plan - nuts! |
| I use ting.com for this and it's great. I pay $17 including taxes and fees for 100 talk and 100 text minutes per month. I have an old phone and disable the data option. |
| We use ting for our family as well. |
| We also used Ting when our oldest was in 6th |
| We use twigby for this. It is prepaid but it is a monthly plan. I think you will get gouged if you are doing a prepaid card/buying minutes etc. They were kind of a racket when they were a thing. My ds's phone with twigby is just talk and text and is like 10/mo. I have a tiny bit of data on his phone so he can text photos to us or his grandmother. It is not a smart phone and does not have wifi. We bought it from twigby |

We have a tracfone. $99 for a year including phone and 1200 mins. The plan has no data so while you’re getting a cheap smart phone there’s not much you can do with it.
Tracfone sells direct on eBay and that’s where i found the best deals |
| I thik OP asked about phone that does not have data access, not only plan. If you use thing.com and buy phone that is a smart phone with a browser option then a kid can connect to the internet via wifi, they don't need a data plan. |
You can get a non smart phone from them or buy your own. https://ting.com/shop/alcatel-go-flip_Black-4GB-refurbished-cdma |

Another Ting. It's $6, plus $3 for minimal calls and $3 for minimal texts. He almost never uses texts, so totals about $9 a month.
For the phone, I just looked at the info at https://ting.com/byod about eligible phones and then a flip phone off Ebay for around $15. |
For our 6th grader, we bought a new Nokia 3300 and got him ting at $6/month with minutes included (no data). If he calls/texts more than $10/month, it's deducted from his monthly allowance (another $10/month). He went to $12 once, never did it again

| Out of all the dumb phones to get, the Nokia is the best. It has an old charm to it. Also he'll never be able to break it. |
