So how bad are things going to get? It’s clear all the rats are fleeing.
We have massive overcrowding, CB refuses to increase budget, and simply no new land to build Further, our tale of two counties means we have $2M homes sending kids to private and more and more AH pouring high need and service students into public schools. Our commute will suck but should we look at FCPS or MCPS. FCC is too expensive for us. |
| If you own, stay as long as you can. If school is working for your family, stay as long as you can, and cash out later. |
Housing prices won’t plummet with the declining schools |
That was a question btw |
Yes, some of them are rats, but if entitled APS parents keep wanting their way about every little thing, it will get alot worse. They could convert Kenmore into an HS without a swimming pool, for instance....not every HS needs a swimming pool. They could convert HB Woodlawn into a typical school, but parents would jump up and down about that. Some tough decisions need to be made, and parents are going to have to go along with them. |
I don’t think so. Traffic is worse every year, and people are willing to make the trade. More people willing to buy into Arlington despite schools, than there are homes. |
I think parents will be willing to have tough conversations, when BOTH boards are willing to do the same. |
FCPS is awful. Please reconsider. |

A lot of tough decisions need to be made. And there will be angry parents no matter what they do.
The SB needs to spend less money on iPads and do some serious lobbying to make sure that when amazon dollars start rolling in, they get enough to pay for what needs to be done. Speaking of the affordable housing lobby, they are asking for half the amazon money. If aps cannot do the same, and parents don’t lobby the same, then this county is lost to all but those north of 50. And importantly, we need new leadership on the school board. And I mean no more talents, NVD etc, people who perpetuate problems. |
Nope. Take a look at any SA SFH. Prices have almost zero relationship to the neighboring schools test scores/perceived quality. Proximity to DC and easy commutes rule the day. Increasingly, people who can afford a three bedroom house in Arlington can afford to go private, if not also tear it down and build new. I call it Alexandriazation. |
We also need to socialize better metrics in AH discussions. The AH industry has learned that decrying the number of units “lost” best dramatizes their case. But in fact, a higher percentage of students are FRL now than 20 years ago, in virtually every SA school. At what point is the community doing enough to make APS accessible to those in need? Is half not enough? What’s a fair percentage? NO ONE wants to have this conversation, it’s fraught and unpleasant. but it’s an important one to have. If we get woke and angry and refuse to talk and just push for more AH without limit the end result is going to be largely poor, overcrowded schools that residents of means feel no connection to. |
| LOL, if you think FCPS is such a haven, you’re not paying attention to the non-APS threads on this forum. |
| Arlington will never be Alexandria ized. All Alexandria schools have high percentages of poverty. With the exception of buckingham, north Arlington will never have high or even moderate percentages of poor kids. South Arlington as a result will always be less expensive by far. |
| Aps will never accept a conversation about the impact of poor kids in mass numbers. Never. They already think the high poverty schools are great and everything is great. |
| I don't think increasing my commute for what are only marginally better schools is helpful. Take that time and spend it with your kids playing games, reading and having fun. |
