I will preface this by saying our dog is our baby and I recognize it is silly to put so much thought into this.
We are going on our longest trip away from our dog ever in a few weeks, departing on a red eye. The day before the red eye we’ll bring him to daycare. Our flight leaves late enough that we could pick him up to say “bye” (this is admittedly for us not for him), or we could leave for the airport a bit on the early side and have the person staying with him pick him up from daycare. WWYD? |

Don't bring him to daycare and then confuse him.
FWIW, I dog-sit all the time. Dogs love me, and know that I love them. But their limit is two weeks. No joke, they get sad right at the two-week mark and kind of mope around. They're fine, and they rally, but they think you're not coming back after two weeks. |
| Advice is the same as with kids in daycare, don't linger, don't make a fuss, all that is for your own benefit. Give the leash to the dog kennel person and walk away, pet him and that's it. "Be a good boy!" And walk away. Dog will most likely be so excited from all the smells and people there, he won't even notice you are gone. It is only after they get used to being dropped off that dogs start to "understand" that kennel is not all that they thought it was. |
See this is why I am having an issue with my family overseas! DH works in a war zone right now, and two teens and I are going to visit this summer. When I told them that this time it will be very hard to stay longer because of my DOG as A. doggy care is expensive and B. it is unfair to my dog to be in a kennel for over 2 weeks, they had a fit! "why are you paying all this money for such a short time?" Well, in the past DH or older DS stayed to work and be with the dog, this time, we are all going for religious ceremony and I am fed up with their attitude. It is a living creature that I am responsible for, that's it. |
I agree with this. Take him to the dog sitter's house, don't have the sitter pick him up from doggie daycare. Or in the future, he might not trust that you'll pick him up from doggie daycare. |

I hate leaving my dogs. I know they hate it are sad, don't eat, don't sleep, etc. But, I've learned to find the best situation that I can, get them a little used to it with some one day trips, kiss them, and know that they do adapt. They understand patterns, and they know you will be back.
It's hard- I get it! |
| Yikes I rarely put much thought into, and now I feel bad! I have a sweet lab who loves other people and is quite independent, and I never thought he “missed” us when we were gone. |
You should leave him once or twice there before the trip so he would have a chance to get used to the idea that you are coming back. |
How long is your trip? How long does your family want you to stay? Would you want to stay longer if not for the dog? |
Yes, possibly, but kennel is expensive and my dog is a golden that is scared of other dogs. I am also doing research for my grad school there. What would you recommend? |
NP here. Can you leave him with a family, friends or at a dog sitter's home? It could be cheaper and leaving him in a home vs. a kennel might feel better for both of you. (PS I get it since I'm a dog lover. I could see myself being more comfortable leaving him in a home but not in a kennel.) |

It doesn’t sound like OP is using a kennel for overnight care. It also sounds like her dog is used to being left at doggy daycare, since her question is should she pick up the dog early at daycare, or should the person staying with the dog pick him up?
If he knows the person staying with him, they should pick him up, so that there isn’t the separation anxiety of you leaving. If he doesn’t know the person staying with him, you should pick him up, and be there when the dog babysitter arrives. |
OP here - you guessed right on all fronts. We aren’t leaving him in a kennel at daycare, he’s staying with my sibling who he knows very well at our house. He also goes to doggy daycare at least once a week so He is very used to it. I like to take him there the day I go on vacation so he is wiped out the first night for the person staying with him. |
| This can't be for real. |
as someone who misses my dog when I'm on vacation, I say pick him up to say bye if you have the time
