I've had 4 First Response test come up with a faint pink second line this week. Yesterday I did a blood test at Kaiser Perm and it came back negative. I know that kaiser does a qualitative HGC test which is less accurate. I now don't know what to think. If I am pregnant it would only be less than 2 weeks. Has anyone ever received a false negative test this early on? Who should I believe Kaiser or First Response? I am really stressed and upset by the test yesterday and would love feedback. |
How late are you or do you know when you ovulated? This will determine whether it was early to test or not? If it is two weeks since you were supposed to get your period, you should definitely have strong positives but two weeks after ovulation can still yield faint results. Either way HcG should be doubling or tripling every couple of days. I would retest in 3 days and go back to Kaiser. That should give you a definitive answer. |
From everyone I have talked to, a line is a line. I had two negative HPT and a negative blood test and now have a thriving 12 month old as a result...so hang in there! |
When did you take those 4 HPT's? Were they one a day? Twice a day?
Your tests should be getting a little darker...in my experience when they weren't getting darker I had a chemical pregnancy. In November I had two days of very light FRER tests. I went in for an hcg blood test on the second day (a Friday) as the line was still very faint. My hcg was a 16. I went back on Monday for a repeat since my lines were still very light and my hcg was 8...and I started bleeding that day. Sorry if this isn't the happy feedback you are looking for. I do hope your lines get darker...when I had my chemical I was 15 DPO so I knew it wasn't looking good if the lines were that light at that time. |
You should get your doc to check your progesterone level. There is no way to get a false positive, could be a false negative (meaning there is not enough hormone to trigger the test to produce a line, i.e., positive test). I have heard from friends that low preogesterone levels make the HPT give faint line. |
It is possible that you had a chemical pregnancy -- the embryo implanted but then stopped growing. This has happened to me numerous times. So my pregnancy test would come back initially positive, high enough for HPT tests to have very faint line, but not as high as the doctor would like to see. Typically my HCG would be around 20-40 at the initial blood test (~15-17 days after ovulation) and then go down. Take a HPT again in another two days -- you should have a strong line on the first response if it is a progressing pregnancy. |
OP here. It's positive! Went and got the better kind of blood test (quantitative) today and it came out positive. We are so thrilled! So I guess the answer is that these HPT are sometimes more effective early on than some blood tests. We also found out that our neighbors had the same thing happen. They took the blood test and it came back negative. She went back the following month when she missed her period again and it tested positive. At that point she was almost 2 months. So I guess if you test negative at your Doctor's office, keep trying. You never know! |
Congratulations OP! Wishing you a healthy pregnancy.
This is the first I've heard of a blood test being less reliable than a home pregnancy test. Live and learn, huh? |
