Finding a nanny

Anonymous
Hi,

I'm moving to the area and was wondering where the best place to look for a nanny would be. I've heard care.com is helpful. Are there any other places? It looks like the going rate is about $20.00/hr, is that correct?

Thanks!

We used Care.com to find our current nanny and were very satisfied with it. We had a specific second language in mind which made the searching easy for us because only a few nannies on the site met that requirement, and the second one we reached out to we immediately hit it off with.

Previously we were in a nanny share we found right here on DCUM (you can find those in the nanny forums, specific to whether you'll be in DC, MD, or VA - https://www.dcurbanmom.com/nanny-forum/forums/list.page). That was also a good situation with a wonderful nanny and other family; we only left because we decided it was time for DC to begin picking up that second language.

And yes, at $20 you should be able to find an excellent nanny around here, especially assuming you have just one child. Good luck!

Care.com is good IF you scour and look carefully. Your ad has to be specific and detailed and then you have to go through hundreds of responses as well as searching profiles yourself.

We wanted an American college graduate with preschool teaching experience, so $20 an hour wasn’t even close! We pay $28 an hour.

What area will you live in? Try to join a neighborhood listserv and interview nannies whose charges are moving or going to preschool.

How many kids?

Number of kids and whether you want nanny to drive, etc will factor in to the price.

We have one son, who will be 2 months when we move. We'll be living in the Bethesda/Rockville area.

+1 Local listservs, if your employer has a listserv. Always best to get a reference from someone in the community.
