We are taking a short (first) <2 hour flight with our 17 month old daughter soon and I'd love to hear your suggestions on how to keep her occupied. Small toys, etc. I am willing to pay any price for sanity!

For such a short flight, you don't need to worry too much. I'd get some stacking cups (if you already have some, get a new set to hold her interest), a few touch and feel board books if she likes those, maybe some finger puppets or really small stuffed animals, possibly a small baby doll. Also bring a bunch of snacks. Maybe some old magazines she can rip up.
What I do is go to Target and troll around the bins where they have things for $1. Also, Target has their Christmas stuff out, and they always have a lot of "stocking stuffer" things, so check those out too. I sound like I have some vested interest in Target, but I don't, I just go there a LOT. |
a paper cup with a lid and straw. That should keep the child happy and entertained.

Someone on another post recommended a box of band-aids, it is fun to take them out and stick on the seats, you, etc. But I guess you have to be prepared to pick up a lot of little pieces of paper. Maybe use as a last resort since they don't take a lot of space in your bag (and it's a good idea to take band-aids with you anyway).
We recently flew with our toddler and I packed an assortment of small toys...he didn't want any of them. But, he did love everything that was in my purse...keys, sunglasses case, business cards, pack of gum, etc. not normally stuff I would let him play with (I guess that was the appeal).
DS's favorite airplane toy is the seatbelt on his seat. Seriously, he spends most of the flight buckling and unbuckling and gleefully exclaiming, "I did it!" The buttons on the armrest are also a big hit. For a 2-hour flight, bring some snacks, something to drink, a book or two, and you'll be good to go.
