Not true. The musical is self funded. Through parent contributions, ticket sales and fund raisers. It is available to all 4th and 5th graders. It is not part of the HSA budget. |
Beauty and the Beast cost $25,000. The Musical Team wants and expects to occupy the gym after school from January - mid-May. The gym is the only common space in the school. Considering that the majority of students are not in the musical, is this really fair? |
| The Musical has become a vanity project for teachers and the enrichment coordinator. |
Do you know how much money was brought in that year? As PP said, money for the musical is raised and is supposed to offset the cost. My kid was in Beauty & the Beast and each performance was packed so many, many tickets were sold. Plus the $250 per kid participation cost, overpriced cupcakes, etc. (I understand the HSA provides scholarships for families who can’t afford the fee.) Your objection to the use is of the gym could be legitimate, but they don’t take over the space until later in the spring and there is still the cafeteria for JEAP to use. If you really want the musicals to stop or significantly change, you’ll need to join the HSA board where you have voting power on the budget and how events are run. You will meet pushback. At this point, it’s a tradition going back 20 years. The musicals are put on by a team of very passionate Eaton teachers and staff members and a majority of rising 4th graders are very excited to finally be able to participate. I’m happy to keep debating the pros & cons of the musical, but it’s off topic here. |
Nobody is saying the musical should go. It would just benefit the children of the school (including the children in the musical) if it was taken tad bit less seriously. |
| Unless the Eaton musical is preparing kids for broadway, there is no reason the musical should be taken as seriously as it is. |
Why do you have to be on the HSA board to voice a concern. Can you just be a regular parent? |
|
20 years is not make it a tradition. The school
was founded in 1910. |
All Eaton parents certainly have the right to voice concerns. I meant that only board members vote on how money is spent, which programs to support, etc. Honestly, if anybody wants to change how the musical is run, get a coalition of parents who agree with you and attend HSA meetings to start the discussion. Decisions about the spring musical happen in the fall when the budget is being put together. |
If Musical is self-funded, why do decisions about the spring musical happen in the fall when the budget is being put together? I’m not trying to be contentious. I’m just trying to understand. |
It’s a good question. My understand is that a budget has two sides - expenses and income. Let’s say pp is correct and $25,000 of the HSA budget was allocated for the musical expenses. The plan would then be to raise the $25,000 in fees, tickets, sales, fundraisers, etc. making it budget neutral. Both expenses and income go through the HSA accounts and the musical team make plans for the musical based on that budget. If a coalition of parents want to downsize or eliminate the musical, the budget would be a place to start. |
| As the 7:41 AM poster inferred, an organized coalition would be met with “pushback” by the HSA board. It’s better to just stick with the status quo. Trust me though, the school and children would benefit if the Musical Team took the musical a little less seriously. |
| At the elementary school age, kids are supposed to be trying lots of different things to figure out what their passions are. If activities requires 100% commitment, they cannot do this. |
Kids also need to figure out what they are good at. If they can’t sing or act and get a very minor role, they should not be required to have the same level of commitment that the kids with main roles have. |
