Applying for TPES magnet program

Anonymous
I'm trying to get a reality check on what I can hope for for next year. If you applied for the TPES grade 1 magnet program, had a child who tested as good for the program, but got wait listed, could you pls post here? Does anyone know what percentage of "gifted" kindergartners actually make it into the program? Thanks.

You might want to direct your question to the GTA Letters or Parents Coalition Yahoo groups to get a better sense of this program and the data you're seeking. TPES students who meet the screening criteria are entered into a lottery for the program. Out-of-boundary students may also apply.

From what I hear, if you're in TP district, you're very likely to get in, but there's only 20 (?) spots for out of district, and 200+ qualified applicants. I am recalling these numbers from memory, they may be off, but it's not easy, for sure.

I think your numbers must be reversed. The magnet takes 100+ kids, so your ratio implies they take 80 qualified kids from Takoma Park, which doesn't seem remotely true. Plus, my kid goes to the magnet, before 6th grade starts they send out a list of all the kids and their addresses, and I'm certain that there are actually just a handful from TP.

I think we were told that there were 5-6 applicants for each spot. So this implies about 500-600 applicants. I'm remembering now too, so I may be off.

Anyway, to get back to OP's question: we know somebody who got in off the waitlist, fairly early on (around June). We also know somebody who turned it down for a Bethesda MS.

PP, she's talking about the Takoma ELEMENTARY school magnet for grades 1&2. Not the middle school magnet.
