Moving to Oakton

Hello! We are moving to Oakton soon from NYC. We have two young children 4 and 2. It's been a transition to say the least and we are feeling a bit lonely and lost.

We would love to start meeting other young families from the area and having our kids socialize and make new friends. We are wondering where we should consider summer camps, soccer, swim, ballet? Best parks to play in for young kids.

Our son will be attending Flint Hill Elementary in the Fall, any way to reach out to local parents with kids in the same class year?

Any websites, facebook groups, list serves you recommend for updates on events or play groups in the area?

Many thanks in advance!

Welcome! The drive to Vienna for all of your kids’ activities and school stuff is going to get old quickly. I honestly don’t know which parks people go to in that part of Oakton. Meadow Lane is a popular park in Vienna for young children. Glendon is also nice.

Flint Hill has a great principal who’s in her second year there. The old principal was terrible and she’s slowly purging the dead weight.

Soccer is VYS, not VYI. Easiest pool for you to join will be Hunter Mill; there are a few FHES families there and no waitlist list I checked.

Thank you! Good to know re: the drive

I forgot to add one question: looking for a toddler program/preschool for my 2.5 year old daughter in the area as well - just something 2 or 3 days a week?

Are you fine with a church-based program? If so, the closest for a child that young is probably Oakton Christian Preschool. Emmanuel Lutheran also takes 2.5 year olds and it’s in Vienna close to FHES.

Why did you choose Oakton?

We found a house we liked, that doesn't require too much work, in a good school district. It's been challenging, we have been searching for months and I would have loved to have more of a neighborhood feel like vienna or GF but we were outbid each time we liked a property.

OP, you're talking 2.5 in the fall, right?

I had a friend who sent her son to Oakton Christian Preschool; he had issues with potty training and they were one of the relatively few part-time places that are willing to cope with kids in diapers. She liked the program, though, and kept her son there after reliability was achieved.

Emmanuel Lutheran will also take kids in diapers for the 2s class.

If you run or walk or have any interest in either, look up Vienna/Oakton Mom’s Run this Town on Facebook. This would be for you rather than kids but when I moved to the area is how I met many of my friends. Great group.

We went to a swim meet at a pool in Oakton, I am sure if you joined this summer you would meet lots of families.

Soccer is VYS (Vienna Youth Soccer). They have a school-year program for very young kids and summer camp programs too.

If you can't join a pool club in Oakton due to wait lists (get on now!), some join either the Water Mine water park (good for little kids) or the Reston Association for access to their facilities.

Camps are run through Vienna Parks & Recs. Flint Hill School (a private school) also runs some camps.

Oakton is a great place to raise kids. Join the Oak Marr rec center. See if your neighborhood has a community organization.

Oakton is a great area and I don’t agree with PP re the drive to Vienna for activities. It’s a totally fine drive and you can use back roads to avoid always being on 123 so don’t let that dissuade you from registering for Vienna youth activities.

My 3 kids are in high school and college now but we raised them all in Oakton in a nice neighborhood full of kids. They were able to run around the neighborhood, play outside, bike, explore the woods, etc.. which was super nice. They all did VYS sports and it was fine getting them to practices/games. They went to Montessori preschool (there are couple in Oakton) and I've heard good things about VBCC and Emmanual Lutheran. Oakton is a nice community- super convenient to toll road,66 and metro (silver or orange depending on where you live).
