Are You Attending a University With Bad Credit?

This article is a bit alarming. Most don't even think about the finances of the colleges that your student is applying to, but more people should.

Just google the credit rating of the colleges you are curious about. Moody's ratings (with 21 steps) range from AAA (the best) to C (the worst).

Here's a WaPo article from a couple of years back: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/moodys-us-college-credit-ratings-downgrades-far-outnumber-upgrades/2014/07/11/4248f474-06c5-11e4-bbf1-cc51275e7f8f_story.html?utm_term=.c82bb9153e3d

Found out my alma mater has an A1 rating & a negative outlook & DC's school has a A1 rating & neutral outlook. Both are in the Midwest. Thanks, good to know!

Wow. I'm surprised to see UMass Amherst and the UNC universities on that list. I expected it to be a bunch of Franklin Pierce/Iona types, not big state flagships.

Because your school could close on you? Because you could lose your scholarship? Because your diplom is a joke to employers?

What’s going on with Georgetown?

In UNC's case, the big state flagship school (Chapel Hill) is fine. It's got a AAA rating, according to the article. Presumably it's a bunch of the other schools in the 17-school system bringing down the average (probably not NC State, but likely the smaller ones).

I was initially surprised about Georgetown, but I recall reading (though probably on this board, so take it with a grain of salt) that it had a very small endowment for a Catholic university of its alleged prestige. I don't have a dog in that fight; I always just liked how pretty the school was as I drove along GW Parkway....

It is pretty until you see it close up. Dorms are awful, buildings are old and not up to date. It just looks stale. Maybe they want that old school catholic look, but even the insides are drab.

And yes, their endowment pales to other ivies and even looks bad to big catholic schools like Notre Dame, Villanova, etc...

Yes there was a multi page thread comparing Catholic Universities where the endowment of GT was brought up several times...and also an annoying GT booster who just would not go away who kept trashing ND. Anyway, out of curiosity, I looked up Notre Dame's rating, and it has an Aaa rating and I believe the article stated that only 7 universities have that rating. Glad DS decided on ND vs GT.
