I’m an Eaton parent and HSA volunteer who was an acquaintance of Thomas. Please don’t brush an entire school community and parent volunteers in such a negative way. I’m sure some people did know about the allegations against him but most of us did not. We were shocked by what came out this summer. I do know of some parents who disliked him or had negative opinions of him but even they had no idea of these crimes. I am keeping tabs on his case because I care about the Eaton community and the children he victimized. It’s important to me that he is found guilty and punished. When I read the docket entry yesterday, I was pleased that he will be in jail for Christmas. |
| Everyone is mad at each other rather than Thomas. It is too bad the community is divided rather than united. |
I will criticize the HSA all day. You have too much access to the children and families. You act as an official dcps entity but only work to enrich a certain few. You waste the money you get on programs and items that only benefit a select few. It's cheaper for a wfh power mom or wannabe power dad to volunteer a small amount of their time and make a few donations a year to control the "enrichment" programs to mimic a private school rather than have to pay for one AND some of you knew about this pedo before his arrest and gave him the "benefit of the doubt" so as much as you guys pat yourselves on the back there are plenty of families in my conversations that feel this way as well, if you ever bothered to listen to anyone but yourselves. Oh and lastly, hsa members are not vetted staff, educators, or administrators period and should leave other peoples kids alone. |
| Where is this sick pervert now? |
| Jail |
I have to say that I concur with the comments regarding enrichment activities. The JEAP classes are open to everyone. There are ton of them but they are not free. However, a lot of the enrichment activities funded presumably by HSA funds are available to only few select students. The Math Team is a perfect example. And I am sorry to say that the Music Program at Eaton poisons the environment of the school and monopolizes a large portion of school funds. At Eaton, the teachers clearly favor the students who are music-minded. If your student is not into music, he/she will be penalized. |
| I heard that the HSA wrote the Musical Team a check for $20,000 one year!! If this is true, this is not equitable use of HSA funds! |
| It seems like Eaton provides a FEW enrichment opportunities that require an ENORMOUS commitment by each student (the Musical is a perfect example). It would be better if Eaton provided MORE enrichment opportunities that required LESS commitment by each student. Then HSA funded-enrichment activities would be available to more students. |
Is the HSA annual budget (who HSA gives funds to over the course of the year) available for Eaton parents to review? If not, it should be. After all HSA money is generated from parent donations and parent-led fundraisers. I think HSA would get more in dollars of donations from parents if parents knew exactly what HSA money was being used for. |
| As a former Eaton parent I think it’s so sad that people are being distracted from the real issue - a privileged Australian diplomat predator who gained access to kids though school, sports and neighborhood communities. It’s disturbing and the fact his wife just fled back to Japan when she was clearly aware of his actions and could help provide evidence to protect other children, is also abhorrent. Squabbling about HSA is ridiculous. Eaton does the best it can to provide programming for all. If anyone has volunteered as a parent, you will quickly learn it’s thankless work that often benefits the entire community. To malign the music program or enrichment activities is just cuckoo…would you rather not have them??? And yes - the budget is and should be transparent to all. For those upset with the current HSA, do something about it instead of complaining on an anonymous message board. |
| Switching gears a little bit, what’s the average time for a case like this to go to trial or whatever the next step is? It’s been 5 months and seems like very little has happened. |
Former parent calling current parents crazy for having a difference of opinion. Exactly the type of smug superiority that makes this community feel so welcoming. I'm glad you had a great experience. Were you there last year? |
He has an expensive lawyer that will likely drag things out as long as possible |
Whar's the point of dragging it out? |
Well, like most lawyers that will say and do anything for money, I'm sure they want to have as many billable hours as possible but aside from that it's a common strategy to delay things to try and weaken witness testimony. |
