Women who Dine Alone are Hookers?

Is this common in NYC? Women dining at the bar are frowned upon?

I've only seen this in NYC and Vegas when women who are all dressed up and eating alone. From the conversations I've heard they do appear to be escorts. I find it fascinating.

It seems like Nello has a bit of a 'reputation' for flashy trashy escorts and dirty old men. I don't think this is the norm in most situations (I travel a lot for work and eat alone at the bar with very few problems.)

I think the cops found out about it and the owner is just trying to protect his business. He had to put down a hard rule that 'no women alone' can eat at the bar, but he should have applied that same rule to single women AND men. That was his fatal mistake.

I was questioned at a famous Inn in Charlottesville Va, if I was sure I wanted to eat alone (at a table, not the bar) because ... someone might get the wrong idea

Ironically I was in business attire, there as the keynote speaker and had brought the hotel thousands of dollars of business. I will no longer, eat their brand-name deli meats.

Whoah.

I've had strange men pay my bill when I was dining alone and had no idea why. Just knew it made me unconformable and I left ASAP.

Well geez even escorts gotta eat, right? What exactly is the problem if they're at the bar?

This bums me out because I often go out to eat at nice places alone and I dress very nicely. I sit at the bar out of consideration for the restaurant, to not occupy a two-top table when I'm solo. Well, at least I'm perceived as a high end escort!

Thank you for this! Now I know that if I see a woman dining alone at the bar, I should go talk to her, confident in the knowledge that she's just a dirty little whore and all we need to do is settle on the price.

Yikes. I travel for work a lot and sometimes eat alone at the bar or table. Pretty sure no one would mistake me for an escort, but sad to think that's what the assumption would be. Sometimes room service is just depressing - especially these days because so many hotels have made it super casual so that it arrives as a boxed dinner, or on a basic tray without even a white cloth.

I travel to NY for work and often eat alone.

Now every time i'm not questioned i'm just going to wonder if i'm not dressed well enough or attractive enough to be mistaken for a high priced hooker.

It's a thing. There was a famous hotel bar near my old office that we would hang out at, and the bartender would occasionally ask one of the male regulars to go talk to a lady sitting alone at the bar to find out if she was an "escort." If the answer was yes, he would quietly talk to her and ask her to leave.

I think the dressing up is key.

I dine out alone a fair amount, because I travel for work. At the point I'm out eating, I've gone back to the hotel and changed into my comfy clothing after a full day of work. I guaranteed no one looks at overweight, middle aged, sweatshirt and jeans wearing self, reviewing my next day's powerpoint on my iPad at the bar, and thinks "oooh, maybe she's a hooker!"

The Boar’s Head Inn is owned by UVA and is unrelated to the deli meat company.

Good lord, I eat out alone all the time. I don't dress uh, alluringly or whatever.

She looks like a low grade hooker
