| Our neighbor's dogs tried to kill our chickens over the weekend yet again. I heard a commotion outside and witnessed our neighbor's dogs in our yard with one of our chickens in their mouth being battered. I managed to save the chicken by screaming no and beating the ground with a broom stick (not the dog). I ran the dogs off and told our neighbor that his dogs were trying to kill our poultry. Someone called animal control and animal control just told us to shoot the dogs next time...WTF we're LoCo???? These dogs are constantly loose and roaming the neighborhood/subdivision. I personally do not wish to do anything to the dogs, as they're family pets and we don't want our neighbor's kids to know something bad happened to their dogs. We spoke to our neighbor and he didn't apologize, but said he will never let them loose again. Sigh! Any suggestions? |
| A fence. |
|
He will never let the dogs loose again. At least he said something concrete and if he manages to do that, it will be satisfactory. What else did you hope he would do? And forget about apologies. Many people, especially when faced with an angry person, will not apologize even if they feel bad and are in the wrong. Some of them think that they are admitting to guilt and may also be held liable. So, just focus on getting concrete things done. |
| Your chickens aren't fenced? |
|
I am not a dog fan in the least, but I was wondering the same thing.
Shouldn't your chickens be fenced in your yard? |
| I assume the dogs are breaching your fence after the chickens. You should invest in an electric fence, or electric poultry netting for their protection. This will also discourage racoons, opossums, foxes etc. The neighbor's dogs won't be seriously injured, but they will learn to stay away. |
| How are your chickens not getting eaten by other predators? |
|
Why not beat the dogs? If a dog had your little pet (let's say a kitten) in it's mouth, wouldn't you beat it? But yea, you should fence your chickens. Do you not have any foxes around you?
|
This. The story is a little hard to understand, OP. Do you have a fence around your property? Are the chickens not enclosed when you aren’t watching them. They will get eaten by any number of predators if they are just loose in your yard. |
| Shoot the dogs. In that situation it would be legal. Shotgun. |
| Maybe buy a chicken coop. |
| Is this a troll thread on LoCo? |
| OP--no this is not a troll thread on LoCo. Our chickens/coop are fenced in with an electric poultry fence, but we do free range them a couple of times a week, usually on weekends. No one has fencing since our properties is over 6 acres. The chickens were right next to our house in the bushes, they do not go very far due to predators/comfort zone. |
Do you have a rooster ? If not, get one. You are probably going to lose a few chickens even if your neighbor really doesn't ever let his dogs out again, but, if you 'free-range' that's the risk you take. |
You are an irresponsible owner. |
