The news on this disaster is really quite distressing, particularly as it comes on the eve of the holidays and in the midst of winter;
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46403405 Does anyone know if an aid effort has / will be organized to assist the poor souls affected? |
| Didn’t this just happen a couple of hours ago? While I’m sure there will be relief efforts, I’m pretty sure they are still in the assess stage. |
| someone I know lives there. they are military and had a house in FL that was just badly damaged by the hurricane, and now the house up there is badly damaged. |
| Also really difficult, because their nights are very long and there aren't many hours of daylight. Hoping for minimal loss - both of life, and infrastructure. |
| I live on the west coast and reports here are of no loss of life since buildings there are designed to withstand earthquakes, roads are badly damaged and I think power is out. The quake was 25 feet deep so that probably helped keep it from being worse too. I’m sure more information will be out by the end of the day. Meanwhile I need to get serious about having an emergency kit ready to go. Our house is anchored to the foundation which theoretically means we should be able to shelter in place, but it would still be a good idea to have a go bag handy so everything is close to each other. |
25 miles not feet. |

Seismologist here. The real problem with this event was it was really close to Anchorage. Most of the damage I have seen is related to ground failure/liquefaction.
Fortunately, since AK is seismically active, the building codes reflect the hazard, and to date, I have not heard of any loss of life. This did generate some beautiful/classic surface waves across the continent. My basement seismometer (Raspberry Shake) recorded it nicely. |
|
Is any of this due to our raping the environment there mining for energy?
Mining, pipelines, fracking? Have humans ruined another beautiful natural environment with greed? |
Yea - fracking!! https://www.google.com/amp/s/theconversation.com/amp/large-scale-fracking-comes-to-the-arctic-in-a-new-alaska-oil-boom-75683 |
No. Alaska is along that pacific fault line. They get earthquakes all the time and have gotten similarly large ones many times in the past. I believe that Alaska has many more earthquakes than all the other states combined, including California. |
Stop spreading misinformation. Alaska is on the convergence of 3 major plates. Fracking is not responsible for this earthquake. Plate tectonics are. |
I was going to say the same thing. Fracking, or more accurately waste water injection triggers earthquake in many places, including OK, TX, KS, OH, and CO. But it has nothing to do with the activity in southern Alaska -- there is no oil their. Earthquakes and mountains go together. That is tectonics. |
I love you. |
+1 if I was dating and had to create a profile with a list of ideals, seismologist would be listed. - totally serious. This stuff fascinates me. ‘My basement seismometer’ ....swoon.... |
