| Is your job ever featured on movies/tv and do they get it right? I'm a lawyer and no, they do not get it right at all. It's far less glamorous and I don't spend all my time in court trying cases or making deep speeches. I just watched a CLE (continuing legal education) program in which they refreshed us on attorneys ethics rules by using examples of times on tv when the rules of ethics were not followed (spoiler alert: tv lawyers appear to follow no ethics rules whatsoever). It was pretty funny (for a CLE). |
| I used to be a teacher in a struggling district. The Wire got it very right. |

"No ethics rules whatsoever." Heehee.
Those are the lawyers that go into politics. There's far less paperwork and a lot more cute clothing in the movies than reality in all jobs, I think. |
| Yup - Silicon Valley. |
| I work in marketing. I did the whole sexy agency thing for a while. There are parts that are like TV--trying to nail a creative pitch for a client, late nights with my design team, lots of "fun" stuff in the office that was part of our brand that looked good on Instagram (our president tried a little too hard with that at times). But most of it is just being insanely busy, tracking hours on accounts, and never having enough resources. |
| Research scientist here. Nope, not even close. The small amount of stuff in my subfield is laughably wrong. |
| I’m a prosecutor, so it varies. SVU is pretty accurate in its portrayal of prosecutors. The biggest misconception I see on TV is that witnesses and victims are very respectful toward prosecutors and are generally thankful and cooperative with us. None of that is true. I was treated with more respect when I waited tables. |
| Ha, no. I am a lobbyist. |
| I'm a legal secretary. I'm wearing jeans right now. I have never filed my nails at my desk. |
| CIA Analyst. Not at all. We’re not Jack Ryan. |
Slightly different but similar - I worked for a guy who had formerly worked as a CPA for the FBI. I was SHOCKED to find out he just ... did accounting stuff. Never chased anyone, no gun, no intrigue. I was completely naive to what it meant to be in the FBI. |
+1 Also in marketing. |
| I'm an auditor. No. |
| For one of my jobs, I’m a dramaturg. Both times that job has been portrayed on TV (Law & Order, Smash) the character has been a villain who wants to be rich & famous. In real life, I’m a collaborator who just wants to be a big drama nerd for a living. |
It’s really super sexy but no one ever shows it. |
