I don't want to do the whole thimerosol debate. Just wondering if there are any other moms out there who are waiting. I have always been very vigilant about vaccines (spacing them out, making sure I get the brand that I have researched). I would NEVER give my DC a vaccine with thimerosol. That being said, this swine flu is freaking me out. DC is 13 months old. He is not in day care though (home with a nanny).
I really do go back and forth. If other parents are having these concerns, what are you doing? |
| There may never be an H1N1 vaccine without thirmersol, so you'll have to weigh what's more important to you. |
| this flu is everywhere--now rampaging through my law firm. the risk of one shot with a little thimerisol seems a lot less than getting this potentially fatal flu. |
| I too am thinking of waiting. DD is 19 months old. |

I tend to be very vigilant about vaccines and am doing an alternate vaccine schedule for my son (19 months). However, I got him the H1N1 vaccine w/ thimerosal yesterday b/c that was all that my pediatrician's office had in stock, and there's no way to know if/when they will ever get a shipment of the thimerosal-free version. H1N1 is already very prevelant and spreading fast, and I would rather my son be protected since the chances of getting the disease are high and complications of it can be dangerous for very young children. For me, it comes down to weighing the benefits and risks and in this case, I felt the benefits of receving the vaccine even with thimerosal outweighed the risk of exposing my son to a low dose of thimerosal and/or actually getting the virus.
Good luck with your decision! |
Agreed. I have a lot of positives and negatives to weigh about the whole situation, too. It's often not an easy choice; you can only do what you think is best for your family. Then if God forbid something bad "does" happen, you will know you tried your best to make the most educated decision possible. |
| Op here- thank you all for your responses. This truly is such a hard decision for me! I think I will end up getting DS the shot this weekend. And then hope and pray that by the time he needs his next dose, the thimerosol free will be available. |
