As long as they're just killing each other and not people in other cities who want a society with law and order.

Why are conservatives so against higher taxes to pay officers better? Until you pay a decent wage you can’t expect sufficient applicants. Put your money where your mouth is.

There is no crime surge. Crime is just part and parcel of living in a modern multicultural society.

The crime surge myth is simply hysteria created by the establishment media.

They want to defund the police..... many jurisdictions are not doing this. Some are. But the actions they have taken have had the result they wanted.

They demonized the police. Called them racists. Attacked them relentless over the summer of 2020 - and attacks continue today. Police are being targeted and assassinated.

Now, police offices across the nation cannot get new recruits. There are record number of retirements and resignations from police departments. Police officers are afraid to do their job for fear they will be accused of a crime.

This was their goal. And, crime is skyrocketing. No surprises there.

I'm a liberal. Not sure who "they" are. I don't want to defund the police. I want police to do better.

I have a lot of patience for police, it's an incredibly difficult job and I couldn't do it. I have no interest in "accusing" them of a crime. I get mad when they kneel on necks or shoot fleeing suspects in the back or laugh about breaking old lady bones for shoplifting. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/04/20/karen-garner-video-loveland-criminal-probe/.

They need to weed out their own bad guys and do better.

+1. Anyone who reports misconduct is branded a “snitch” and penalized by fellow cops. So why would you if it meant no one would come the next time you called for backup? Until the culture changes everything goes around in the same destructive loop.

That’s what the flag with the blue line stands for “thin blue line” cross it and you don’t get back up… cops own snitches get stitches.

Agree.

If people didn’t report nuisance crimes, overall crime stats would be far lower. The numbers are misrepresented.

When good cops protect bad cops, they’re culpable. The police need to do a better job of policing themselves.

The respect problem they have was earned.

When cops clean house, this issue will go away.

Crime statistics showing an increase will interfere with support for defunding the police.

A better approach is to not collect crime data.

The problems are manifest and varied:

1. Generational divide - lots of old cops who were waiting to retire at the right time. Similar to the federal government, there is a huge wave of older workers and not enough young bodies have been trained to replace them.

2. Gatekeeping - the cops get to decide who become the next cops. They got their sons, relatives, and neighbors jobs on the force. But they actively discourage others from outside their personal circles to join. So much nepotism.

3. Associated with #2 above, so many young people won't qualify. Ever used pot, prescription drug, or had an issue with law enforcement? Automatically rejected. They basically look for reasons to ding a random applicant, but will bend the rules for their own kids or friends.

4. Older cops have degraded the pay and benefits for new recruits so much. The unions would control costs by forcing cuts on the younger generation of police in order to maintain high pay and lucrative pensions for older cops. If you want to work in security services, the U.S. military is a much better option if you're young in terms of pay, benefits, etc.

^^This. Listen to "On Our Watch" podcast. It's truly horrifying about the things that were swept under the rug when they thought no one would ever know.

Also, why would you want to go into a career where you risk your life for mediocre pay and little respect?

+100

Crime data by it’s very nature is racist, and it provides talking points for racists.

Most murders occur in very insular communities. They don’t affect you. So why is it so important for you to obsess about things that will never affect you? Do you get some kind of thrill knowing how many young men of color are killing each other? Is that the sort of thing you and your trumpet buddies like to keep tabs on when you meet for you Friday night cross burnings?

PP here. You are incorrect. Even Atlanta's Black mayor and other Black politicians have stated the same, although they mostly attribute the crime increase to Covid. Fewer cops, fewer arrests, and young men released to commit crimes again. Two sweet 7 year old girls paid with their lives.

I live in a society. Murders and nuisance crimes affect me. It's curious that you seem to brlieve that the only crime that matters is when they are outside the community. Whatever this means. Based on your criteria, we should stop reporting crimes in DC unless the victim isn't from DC.
