I may not tip but my DH does.

You're still an ass if you don't tip. The bolded just means your husband isn't. Not tipping people does NOTHING to encourage restaurants to pay their workers a fair wage, nor does it promote laws that would require that. It's being cheap dressed up as being progressive, and it's a terrible disguise.

How do we bring about change, then?

There are organizations that are lobbying for just this. Get involved in one. Vote for those laws when they are on the ballot. Write your local and state representatives and express your support for this.

I stopped giving big tips for those services since the fees have gotten completely out of control and the services just use the tips to offset the wages they pay. I've been told that if I tip $8 on delivery, that's just $8 the service doesn't pay the worker, rather than an "extra" $8 for them. It's throwing good money after bad unfortunately...

That is why servers pee and spit in your food. Extra flavor for you! Enjoy!

I add my period blood to food and I'm proud of it.

Yum yum, I love watching you and your cubbo kids suck that slop down.

Realize that waitstaff make $2.13 an hour if you don’t tip. Unless your Mackenzie Bezos, your move is just shortchanging poor people everywhere.

I’m gonna guess you’ve never waited tables either. Try it. I bet you wouldn’t last a week.

This is a lie. Please stop perpetuating it. If someone who makes a tipped wage doesn't earn the equivalent of minimum wage during their shift, the employer is legally required to make up the difference.

Oh, please. You are so naive. In reality, if you press the issue, they either fire you ("at will") or cut your hours. They know servers can't afford to sue them.

Grow up.

That doesn't change the FACTS, and you all should stop trying to use it as a cudgel to guilt people into tipping you as if it's required. Focus your energy on the person ACTUALLY screwing you!

LMAO. And you think you deserve tips? Trash.

A lot of servers make ridiculously low wages under minimum wage requirements and are dependent on tips. Line $2/hr. They also have access to your food and drinks. I 1) respect them enough to give them fair payment for their work and 2) want to be able to return to food establishments without my food being spit on or dropped (don’t tell me about what already happens in the kitchen please).

You and your family being exposed to STIs or AIDS is worth more than a tip. That's the problem with thinking you have power, those of us who handle your food can do so much more harm than you can. I don't get tipped? Whatever. You get an illness that follows you forever? Ha.

Keep treating people like shit. Turnabout is fair play.

My SO is a bartender and he does not want this to pass in VA. Right now, on a good night, which is usually Wed-Sun, he makes ~$45-50/hr.

He makes $2.13/hr. Even on a bad night, like a Monday or Tuesday, which he doesn't have to work anymore since he's been there longer, he would walk way having made enough to average out ~$19/hr.

There are some years where he'll make more than I do with a masters degree. He and most of his coworkers don't want a $15 minimum wage. They don't want less tips and they know that is what will happen with a higher wage.

My daughter is a server in a high end restaurant and a former bartender. She does not want the $15 min wage for herself because she also knows people will tip less. However, she acknowledges that servers in low end restaurants need it to survive.

In her restaurant if a customer does not tip at least 15% management will make up the difference and there are no repercussions for asking for that to the servers. Management does not want the servers to treat low tipping customers any differently from other customers.

The last few months she has made more than in her ten or so years of serving, averaging about $5000 a month just in tips and working 40 hrs or less a week.

There are plenty of people who understand how tipping works and act accordingly. If you protest your bias against tipping by retaliating against your server you are just a simple minded douche bag. Own it.

Refuse to go to restaurants that don't pay their staff a living wage.

I was wondering if anyone would quote that movie!

That said I hate tipping, and unless it’s really good food I prefer takeout where I just leave a dollar or two.

Question: if I tip $1-2 for takeout worth $10-30, will they spit in my food?
