You don't have to read DCUM--just watch the School Board meetings. Listen to Kimberly Adams' demands. Listen to the SB members' decisions.

That is not misinformation, misdirection, or propaganda. This is not partisan. Except for posts like yours attacking the GOP or anyone who thinks schools should open.

Oh no, they’re right. Your highness moral rectitude. Always right. Always the good guys. Even if they impose their choices on you. Pro choice huh? Lmfao

It's fine if you don't agree. You're entitled to your opinion.

For the people who do want schools open - it's up to you to convince the school board. You need to show the board that there are more people who want to reopen, and that the evidence is on our side, so they don't just listen to people like PP here.

I’m with you... my opinion is to keep virtual until the next school year.

OP here. I actually agree with this. If you look at the letter I drafted, the focus is on reopening no later than Fall 2021, after teacher vaccines.

I basically have no hope that schools will reopen before summer - and it's possible that reopening before Fall 2021 will backfire if teachers aren't vaccinated and there is a surge of transmission that causes closure again. But at the same time, keeping schools virtual into the 2021-2022 school year, after teacher vaccinations, is unacceptable for the wellbeing and education of our children.

So I think the goal of reopening with in-person teaching in Fall 2021 is where we should put our efforts.

I would really like it if we could stop wasting time, energy, and money on a crappy concurrent model (for which I doubt we have all the equipment to pull off properly), and these ever changing crazy back to school schedules (why do 10th graders start a week before 11th, for example, or however that is ordered), and work like crazy on getting a normal school year starting in the fall.

I would only advocate getting the little ones back in the building — or maybe for outside classes — for springtime school. Having taught ES in the past, I have no idea how the teachers are doing this virtually. I would think it would be crazy hard.

As a HS teacher, I have to say I am so tired. I am tired of being trained and retrained, scheduled and rescheduled, and I would just like to have a plan - a simple plan. I think concurrent might break me, so I am NOT advocating for a return before fall unless we can start talking about hybrid or some other plan to get kids in person education with whatever social distancing they need.

Fellow HS teacher here.

I’m also tired of being sitting tired for so long. But, ride the wave and chill. Summer is around the corner.

You have a roof, hot water, and food. Relax and breath. Others have it a lot worse. You know it. I know it.

So true. Thanks, fellow teacher. 😊

* wanting your kid to be taught be a teacher in school = Republican
* wanting your kid to remain at home in DL for eternity = Democrat

Wanting your kid to be educated should not be a partisan issue. Please stop making it one!

It's pretty obvious that PP is a Champion of Misinformation because they want to shut down competing viewpoints. The 'stay home' advocates have been putting forth weaker, more strained, more incoherent arguments each day. And it is beyond clownish to represent this as a partisan issue. I mean, PP...you have absolutely zero credibility.

It IS a partisan issue. Openfcps is a GOP initiative. Trump and the GOP were primary movers of the open schools push and even squashed research that showed it was unsafe. I want to schools to stay virtual until they can be opened safely - meaning mainly that teachers have been vaccinated and numbers are going down.

It is you who have no credibility. The GOP in Fairfax literally recruited people to come on this board and push exactly the talking points and misinformation that you are pushing.

So Joe Biden who wants K-8 open ASAP is a GOP operative? I had no idea. Govenor Northam who has directed schools to prepare to open is a GOP operative? Who new?! Chap Petersen, Democratic state senator from Fairfax City, who made an impassioned speech on the state senate floor yesterday about the need for students to be allowed to attend school in person is suddenly a GOP operative? The links that OP included in the letter from such places as the New York Times, NPR, and the NIH - I had no idea those were widely recognized as mouthpieces of the GOP!

You are conflating initiatives to FUND the SAFE opening of schools and SUPPORT the SAFE opening of schools with a partisan push to open schools right now regardless of safety (and a big part of the openfcps campaign is the targeted denigration of democratic school board members, especially Frisch and Omeish, for all too obvious reasons, which calls into question whether openfcps is really even about opening fcps).

If it's so partisan to denigrate SB members, then why is the NAACP's education chair saying basically the same things about how poorly run school board meetings are as the pro-open people?

She's pro-stay-closed and flamingly progressive and even she points out that their meetings are absurd.

Anonymous wrote:Like many of you, I am concerned that public schools won't reopen in Fall 2021 despite teacher vaccinations. Feb. 2nd is the next meeting when the FCPS School Board will discuss the Return To School plan. Many parents have contacted Board members about reopening (thank you!), but we need to keep it up and get more parents to speak out. If you've already contacted the Board in the past, great - let's do it again before Feb. 2nd. If you haven't, now is a good time. We will only have an impact if enough parents speak up - so please encourage other concerned parents to do the same, and please post other organized efforts to contact the Board in the thread.

The FCPS School Board meets next on Tuesday, February 2nd, so messages should be sent before then. During the last meeting on January 5th, Superintendent Brabrand presented the Return To School plan to the Board, using recent research and health metrics to point out that schools can reopen safely. The School Board dismissed the plan and even said that students may need to be vaccinated before schools can reopen, which won’t happen for years!

To make it as easy as possible, below is a sample letter to School Board members. All you have to do is copy/paste the letter and email it to the members, as well as Superintendent Brabrand. Here is where you can contact each FCPS School Board Member (you can submit a question, or click on the member’s page to see their email address). Here is how to contact Brabrand. You can also sign up to speak or submit a video for the Board meeting, just like the teachers' union does, but spots fill up fast. And, even though we are all frustrated, please be respectful.

Here is the sample letter. Share it or send your own - but speak up before Feb. 2nd!

Dear FCPS School Board:

I write to strongly urge you to do everything possible to reopen schools with in-person teaching no later than Fall 2021, once teachers have been vaccinated. Although teachers have made an admirable effort with distance learning, our children are emotionally and mentally stressed, deprived of social contact, and not learning as well as they did during in-person school. This burden falls most heavily on children of color and children that are not from privileged backgrounds.

Pediatricians resoundingly agree that it’s important for student emotional and intellectual development that schools reopen as soon as possible:

Keeping schools closed fails our most at-need students, and fails our community equity and academic goals. There is a great deal of evidence that distance learning is widening the achievement gap along racial and economic lines:
- https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/public-and-social-sector/our-insights/covid-19-and-student-learning-in-the-united-states-the-hurt-could-last-a-lifetime

Our own FCPS data show that students are failing at a much greater rate as a direct result of distance learning, especially among economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities:

At the same time, recent research shows that in-person schooling is safe, children are not a driver of coronavirus transmission, and schools are not a significant vector of community spread:
- https://www.npr.org/2020/10/21/925794511/were-the-risks-of-reopening-schools-exaggerated

While teacher vaccination is crucial, we strongly urge the School Board to reject other unrealistic and arbitrary reopening metrics that would harm student learning and emotional health by unnecessarily delaying in-person school. This includes requirements for “no community spread for 14 days” or vaccination for all students, which are impossible to meet even for seasonal flu. Instead, we support reopening FCPS based on the recent guidelines from the Virginia Dept. of Education, focusing on in-school metrics and mitigation strategies:

We respectfully request that the School Board ensure all FCPS students have the option to attend in-person school with an in-person teacher for the 2021-2022 school year, because that is the environment that will best enable all children in our communities to thrive.

Thank you.

If covid is not under control, schools should NOT open. It's not hard to understand.

I hope this poster has her resume all polished and ready to go.. I'm sure Outschool is hiring.

Outschool is way better than FCPS distance learning. My kids have never had a poor Outschool class.

Oh just stop. Are you this crazy in real life? Turn off the MSNBC.

Guess what? Biden wants schools open, too. So now it is **ta da!** a democratic push! Me? I don’t care who is holding the key—I just want them to open the doors!

Hi it's OP. In light of the above conversation, I just want to again say that I'm not affiliated with any political party, or the OpenFCPS group. I'm also not denigrating anyone. I'm just a concerned parent encouraging other concerned parents to speak up to the FCPS School Board before their meeting on return to school. Please do speak up before Feb. 2nd, whether using the sample letter or your own.

Misinformation and lies are not "viewpoints." It's time to move past that, MAGA.

This is all you got...really? Call somebody Republican and run way like you've made a point? These stay closed arguments continue to weaken.

What is your goal exactly? There has already been a date set for return to school, and it's pretty soon. Vaccinations for teachers are happening very soon. Do you really expect the SB to just suddenly open everything tomorrow, while VA is at the highest transmission numbers ever and we're just a few weeks from maybe being able to save the lives of our teachers when they do go back? Why are you still making such a stink?
