Freaking Girl Scout Camp

Anonymous
Just FYI, I just registered my daughter for GS camp through the Girl Scouts of Central MD Council. It was painless. No waitlists, no being online at a specific time, the system worked. Registration was confirmed the next day. They still had lots of camps with openings for the rising 6-8th grade set (I didn't look at availability for other age groups.)

Since GSCNC is such a cluster, this might be another option to consider.

Good to know! Hoping that GSCNC will work, but I have heard good things about GSCM and also GS of Chesapeake Bay, so I'm looking at those. Our Potomac Woods reservations were officially canceled in the system today.

They just sent an email about a new lottery-based process, which actually sounds pretty good as far as addressing inequities and technical challenges and allowing people to give multiple preferences, include sibling requirements, etc. Fingers crossed that this will be a good process!

If our registration hasn't been cancelled, is it valid? We registered that evening after the apparent kerfuffle happened.

PP here, and FWIW, I had gone ahead and paid the full amount

No idea -- I registered my child in one registration and another troop member separately (since I'm troop leader). I noticed a couple of days ago that the other member's registration was canceled but mine was still showing up, and then today my registration was canceled. So it looks like they may still be working through the cancellations.

They told everyone that all registrations were being cancelled.

With such a limited number of spaces it’s inevitable that some people are going to be disappointed, but the process definitely seems more equitable and accessible than before. And even in past years, once the initial rush subsided and they started getting down into the waitlists, the staff has been excellent at juggling things to make sure girls get at least something, if maybe not exactly what they wanted. Hopefully this will just move that work upfront to the initial wave of registrations.

I'm a leader in GSCM. I've never been to Conowingo but a couple of my girls went last year and *raved* about it. Hope your daughter has a great time!

There was an update today from council that due to staffing issues, Winona will NOT open as sleep away camp this year. They are extending the lottery submission deadline until 2/15 at 6am (so really 2/14).
-----------------------------------------------------

It is with deep regret that we have made the decision to not open Camp Winona as a traditional sleep-away camp for summer camp season 2022. We continue to deal with the consequences of the COIVD-19 global pandemic including the challenge of hiring seasonal camp staff. Currently, we do not anticipate hiring enough staff to support 3 sleep-away camps. Potomac Woods and May Flather staffing continue to be a priority and we are on track to open those camps. Please know that this was a difficult decision and has come after a great deal of consideration.
We realize that some families were waiting for Camp Winona’s registration lottery, so we wanted to make this announcement in a timely fashion. Because this option is no longer available, we will be extending the lottery for Camps Potomac Woods and May Flather. THE LOTTERY WILL BE EXTENDED UNTIL TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15 AT 6 AM.
The following information is copied from our January 26 update found on this page of our website: www.gscnc.org/sleepawaycamp
Submit your camper’s lottery entry here: form.jotform.com/GSCNCCamping/2022-sleep-away-lottery.
This lottery will allow parents to select up to 6 program preferences, provided there are 6 or more programs advertised for your camper's age group. View our program grid here. You will be able to put in the name of 1 (one) buddy and any siblings, and answer the following questions:
Buddy: Please select an option. More restrictive selections may limit placement as spots are limited and selected randomly. If your camper has a sibling close in age that they would like to be placed in the same program with, please list them as a buddy, NOT a sibling.
No Buddy: My camper does not need to attend camp with a buddy
Buddy Required: My camper will ONLY attend camp if they are placed in the same program as their buddy
Buddy Preferred: My camper would prefer to attend camp with their buddy but will still attend camp even if they are not placed in the same program as their buddy
Sibling(s): Please select an option. More restrictive selections may limit placement as spots are limited and selected randomly.
No Sibling(s): My camper does not need to attend camp with sibling(s)
Sibling(s) Required - Same Camp Location: My camper will ONLY attend camp if they are placed in the same week at the same camp location as their sibling(s)
Sibling(s) Required - Different Camp Location: My camper will ONLY attend camp if they are placed in the same week as their sibling(s), but they do not both have to be attending the same camp location (i.e. one camper at May Flather, one camper at Potomac Woods).
Sibling(s) Preferred: My camper would prefer to attend the same camp week as their sibling(s) but will still attend camp even if they are not placed in the same week and/or camp location as their sibling(s).

The Council is currently developing program/training opportunities that will take place at Winona this summer. However, these programs will not operate like a traditional sleep-away camp. Current ideas for programming include Me & My Gal/Guy, adult training opportunities, and day program events. More information about these opportunities will be available on our Council website by March 22.

They posted this on the FB groups around 9:30 this morning: "Lottery notifications will start going out soon in batches. All emails should be out by 3pm. The lottery results page should also be updated around 3pm." The results page is here: https://form.jotform.com/GSCNCCamping/2022-sleep-away-lottery-results

Good luck to all!

Not in. I am seriously pissed. Sixth year in a row and now she's out. This is not the organization for us any longer. Way too inept.

We had a spot during the original registration fiasco, but did not get in by lottery. We never win the daycamp lottery either so DH is half convinced camp doesn't exist.

Sucks because I was a lifelong girl scout who went to camp every summer, and want DD to have those experiences.

Same here. We were in during original go. Girls who went through this should have been give preferred placement. Brokenhearted twice sucks.

Just do what PP mentioned and go to one in PA? The scout camp I went to in NC is way nicer than Winona or PW and cheaper [and has horses, a major draw for her]. My gal is heading there this summer instead.
