BCC/WJ Joint New ES Study

It’s so very odd .. why is MCPS paying clearly incompetent consultants? Why did they release a survey with 10 sites only to immediately walk it back to 6?

News coverage in Bethesda Beat makes it sound as if the site selection has nothing to do with BCC and Ashburton PTA is trying to claim Grosvenor for its own purposes’

What does that mean?

Bethesda Beat says:

"Raylene Grant, the PTA president at Ashburton Elementary School, said her school has hundreds more students than it was designed for, making it tough for kids to get their lunch every day.

Even though Grosvenor is being used now as a holding school, it makes sense to use it to alleviate crowding, she said."

OK. I don't see how that equals Ashburton claiming Grosvenor for its own purposes. Obviously relieving Ashburton and other schools' overcrowding is one of the stated goals of this effort.

The article isn't the best - It talks about how WJ cluster already picked this site and then has this quote from the PTA president. They should have quoted someone from BCC cluster to make it balanced. But this school seems quite a ways off into the future, anyway, if they're building an addition on BES first. Maybe they'll hit the 600 extra students in WJ/Woodward clusters first (Because aren't Farmland and Garrett Park likely destined for Woodward?)

Not only is the Kensington site way too small but it’s also landlocked. Three major roads Connecticut, Knowles, Summit surround the 2 blocks around the school. There are very few elementary students that could walk to that school without having to cross some pretty treacherous roads. Egress would be horrific.

Which is a good reason for Kensington to be used as a holding school to replace the one they'd lose if they reopen Grosvenor.

What students currently zoned to BCC would go to Grosvenor if they re-opened it? Seems pretty far. Or would they backfill BCC students from Bethesda Elementary/North Chase (Kensington) into Wyngate/Kensington Parkwood?

Possibly - and we've heard rumors of NCC becoming K-5 again (with Chevy Chase/Rosemary Hills remaining paired).

Seems like this is a case where the boundary study is sorely needed since the current ones are so out of date.

That could help relieve RCF, because they could then rezone some current RCF kids to RH/CC or NCC.

How many kids at RCF are immersion? Could they move the immersion program to NCC and have a smaller K-5 cohort while keeping pairing with RH?

Maybe not with CC Lake development?

At the board's work session today, an amendment to the CIP was presented for consideration which would favor selecting one of the development sites: the WMAL site or one of the two White Flint sites. "The development sites may have better potential for taller, more urban and compact footprints than would closed school sites in established neighborhoods."

There is a public hearing on Wed. March 5th at 6pm.

Isn’t there a school already planned for the WMAL site anyway? That’s a huge development and Ashburton is stuffed to the gills.

No, there isn't a school already planned, just a piece of land designated for a future school.
