This whole role model thing that people obsess about, particularly women, does nothing to help bullied kids. Why do the bullies have special programs to keep them in school and out of prison (including their own alternative schools) while the bullied kids get nothing except more bullying and in many cases suicide (and in the even more extreme mass shootings). This doesn’t just affect boys either. Google “bullying suicide” and you will see plenty of articles about it. The schools do nothing. Speaking from personal experience, I wasn’t only bullied by students, one of my 7th grade TEACHERS made fun of me. |
While we're talking about young white men who shoot up schools, we also have to talk about young black men who shoot up their neighborhoods as part of gang violence.
Both are endemic problems in our country, and both need to be addressed. |
One more thing: The real thing shooters have in common is not their race, but rather their gender -- we have had virtually no female mass shooters, or women perpetrating gun violence in general.
It's not that women suffer from fewer mental problems; in fact, women are more likely to suffer from depression than men. It's that men are more likely to express extreme despair through harming others, while women are more likely to express it by harming themselves. Angry young men is really our problem. |
There are actually programs in inner citi s specifically to help young black men avoid violent peer pressure. Not saying they're all working, but they exist. |
Stay on topic. |
Women have better communication than men. They have better networks of friends. Many boys (and men) have only one or two friends. Many men, after moving for work, have zero friends in middle age and their suicide rates are through the roof. What exactly do you propose be done? |
I am staying on topic. OP asked when white people are going to address the fact that members of their community are perpetrating mass shootings. My point is that it's not white men -- it's men in general. |
My nephew’s teacher routinely told him he’d never amount to anything. Sorry that happened to you pp |
And almost all of them had a history of violence against women in some way--abuse, harassment, or assault of wives or girlfriends--and they often participate in online fora devoted to men's rights, incels, and other subcultures seething with toxic masculinity (meaning, ideas about masculinity that are based on domination, control, and entitlement, rather than positive ideas about what it means to "be a man.") The same week as the Santa Fe shooting, there was another mass shooting in Texas--a man shot and killed his kids and his ex-wife's boyfriend, and shot and injured his ex-wife. These are men who believe that they are entitled to women's romantic and sexual attention, and that they are entitled to hurt others when they do not get it. This stew of resentment and entitlement is literally killing people. |
You're wasting your breath. They don't care. You're a white guy. You're the enemy. All they want at the end of the day, is for you not to exist at all. They should at least have the courage to come out and say that, but they don't have it. |
This is so absurd that I was convinced it was satire. Poor oppressed white males. LOL! |
. This. I have been counseling students in the college admissions process for the last several years. Being black (whether or not AA), Hispanic, female or lbgt is a huge boost in admissions particularly the more elite the school is deemed to be. I have been privy to GPA, SAT, extracurriculars, awards and honors, income, compelling family history, etc. Being a white male or an Asian male puts the student at a huge disadvantage—no diversity boxes get checked for these students. My spouse is involved in hiring in the workplace for coveted jobs in a sought after industry and being a white male is a huge disadvantage. Don’t for a minute tho k your daughters will not benefit from being able to claim Hispanic status. |
If universities or employers want to have a more diverse community or workforce, that is their prerogative. I'm sure your husband would be highly sought after if he went into a field where white men were underrepresented. Early childhood education or nursing come to mind. |
. Sadly, in an effort to correct past past wrongs, we as a society are creating new wrongs and our young males—particularly white males—are paying the price. The negative input they receive is overwhelming and where are they to turn? Their supposed “white privilege” means that their life is supposed to be so much easier and their opportunities are supposed to be so much greater than those of the “oppressed” groups—which is basically everyone else. So if you are a young white male and you are depressed, bullied, abused, under-privileged, etc., where are you to turn and why would you think you would even get support because, you know, you are a white male and society says you have it all. We cannot continue to correct past wrongs by creating new wrongs and may those who did nothing wrong pay for those who did. |
