Hearst

We got a low waitlist number as OOB in an upper grade at Hearst. But we also have a rising K kid (in preK4 now) with a not-as-great wait list number - that could possibly change if she becomes OOB with sibling preference? Do we have any chance of getting in our second child in as an OOB K this fall?

Good luck! I guess no one knows how the waitlist will move.

^^I absolutely do not know what you are talking about. My OOB kid is coming from a very good private. I have neighbors who have a kid at our IB school who are on the WL at Hearst because their DC is exceptionally advanced and is looking for a better fit. So these are two well prepared OOB kids. I don't need to be afraid to say anything as this is, after all, an anonymous forum.

This is very curious because at a Hearst open house late last year the principal said that in order to maintain academic and social continuity, she would not accept any new OOB students after 3rd grade (she obviously has to take IB students at any time). Now I'm wondering what else might have changed? For example, she also said that in order to maintain their unique accredidation, that there could never be more than 20 kids in K. We are IB for K next year and this has me worried.

She told us at an open house earlier this year that she would not take anyone past 3rd grade too from OOB, saying that it is too hard for kids coming from schools to catch up.

Anyone know if the rumors about a PS3 for Fall 2015 are still circulating? Or any legitimate update on it?

8:22 here. We won't be playing catch up. Thanks for your concern.

Hi - you quoted me. No need for snark. I wasn't making a judgment, although you seem to have read it that way. I don't care either way. We are thrilled to be in Hearst. All I was doing was quoting Dr. B. At the Open House we attended, she specifically said she does not "take" new OOB kids after 3rd grade because, again, using her words, it would be too much for them to "catch up." Again, her words.

Whatever. Hearst is a travesty.

Wow, queen of the snappy comeback. You make zero sense.

Another Hearst parent here. Congratulations to those who were matched with Hearst during the lottery. Welcome to ALL prospective Hearst families: IB and OOB alike.

Here is what I love about our school

- Dr B is a strong, committed leader
- we have a lot of terrific teachers
- great student: teacher ratio
- overall small school environment
- ability for parents who want to be involved and impact programs and offerings at the school - two recent examples - a few motivated parents combined with the support of Dr B and teachers put a robust after school enrichment program in place this year and arranged for a full time native Spanish speaking teacher for next year
- awesome new facilities budgeted and already under construction
- the fact that my kid is happy there and she is learning - both academics and how to be a good citizen and friend

It's a great school community and no matter where your house is located once your kiddo walks in the door he/ she is an Owl!

Come meet us and ask your tough questions at the next Open House (April 25) or email Dr B directly as she offered in her prior post (her email is on school website)

And while everyone is reading about Hearst, let me invite everyone who is interested to our annual auction fundraiser, Raise the Roof, on Friday, April 25 at the Austrian Embassy. You can buy tickets or check out the great items to bid on at http://hearstes.schoolauction.net/2014! My spouse and I went as a rising PK4 family and it was fun to meet the staff and other parents.

This is a great idea. As a future parent in a few years, we can try to come as well!!
