Who is unapologetically Rich

Keeping it simple - 2013 income just over 4mm, net with just over 14mm, hard work and good luck have gotten us here. 2 school age children with undergrad and grad school money set aside, $500,000 HOME in PWC that is in a wonderful neighborhood with a lot of families, white picket fences and a real sense of community. Splurges? Wife has her dream Mercedes, we have a suite at the MCI Center and 3 week long trips to the carribean, NYC and our beach house in SC. When we travel we fly first class and upgrade to the more expensive accomodations. 5% of income goes to church - 5% goes to a couple of charities that are important to us. Keeping a level head and not spoiling are kids (too much) is difficult at times but always remembering where you came from so that you can always remember to appreciate what we have. Oh and shoes...DW loves her shoes...and I do not mind as long as they are high heels and she wears them to bed.

Can you say where you like real estate in SC (for 2nd home, eventual retirement) and where you all love to vacation in the Caribbean?

Sure, we have a home in Surfside Beach, SC, and hope to retire there the moment our last graduates high school. As for the Cariibbean, we tend to keep going back to the Bahamas, St Lucia, St. Martin or Aruba. They work for us and are family friendly. We rarely travel to Europe or the UAE as I will travel to those places for work. Again, the Caribbean works for our family so we keep with what works for everyone in our family.

Thanks. We're looking around Kiawah but don't want feel like one of the poors when we get there (our financial picture is about half yours; DH could retire in 5 yrs @55 but we'd still have the 2 youngest in the house so high schools are still and issue).

OP again, I forgot to mention that I do not look at our SC home as an investment - though it is one. We do not invest in any other real estate other than our main residence. I honestly do not want the hassle. We have been approached many times. Our money is divided up and set aside (for education we figured at least 6 years of higher education for each child would be in the 750k range so have that set aside), the usual stocks, bonds, market, etc and plenty in savings. I am risk adverse and not taking full advantage of the money and are perfectly fine with that. Future splurges will be fun things that we know are bucket list items but again we have carefully set aside.

Thank you for this. We just inherited $1.5M and the hassle of rental properties (is that what you mean?) seems like a hassle to us also. It is in stocks and bonds now.

Not PP but we have a home in Kiawah - and we absolutely love it. Prices there are fabulous right now. I know that we are probably one of the "poors" on Kiawah, but by the time we retire, the home will be paid off, and we can always upgrade to a nicer place if we want. I think Kiawah is a fantastic retirement option. You've got everything - great city nearby (Charleston), beach, golf, tennis, easy access to airport for travel.

Re: original thread - HH income is $600k+. I don't feel rich at all in DC - just average. We own no car. DD is in daycare. We have occasional nights out with a sitter and occasional splurges with travel/luxury item. Yes, we do own a vacation home, but I consider it part of our retirement/investment portfolio. Most of our money goes to taxes - Federal, DC.

Our 2013 HHI was $1.3 million and we have a net worth reaching $10m. Well, I really should say DH income was $1.3 as I am a SAHM.

Retirement and college are fully funded. My parents are saving for DC's college, too as they have no idea how much our net worth is. I tell them I appreciate their kindness but that it is also not necessary...but they still put in money at X-mas and b-days.

We live in a 2800 sq.ft sfh and have two local rental condos. We live near good schools so our kids go to public school. We have a twice a month house cleaner.

I drive a 9 year old Hybrid, DH a 2 year old large SUV.

We vacation every two years in Hawaii and rent someone's Marriott 1 bdrm. timeshare usually for around $1500. We also vacation in the very exotic locations of FL, NY, VT and stay with family. We own a RV/trailer and camp in the summer almost every other weekend with another family.

Kids take music and swim lessons, dance, sports and just started horseback riding once a week. We belong to a pretty high end gym/club but DH's company pays for the family membership.

Our DC look forward to participating in our 2x yearly neighborhood garage sale. They are responsible for going through their stuff to decide what to sell. They make signs, price the stuff, set it all out and collect the money. They also do a lemonade stand with snacks to raise money for the animal shelter (we've owned two dogs - both were rescue dogs). 100% of the lemonade stand goes to the shelter, 10% of their "stuff" sales goes to another charity of their choice, 40% to the bank and 40% as spending money.

DC wear clothes from Mini Boden/JohnnieB, Gap, Old Navy, Macy's but I bargain shop and always shop sales. DH lives in Burberry polo shirts I buy on sale during Nordstrom Men's sale. I wear mall stores mid-range clothing - but again - always on sale.

We are a big supporter of education and make significant donations to education and literacy programs of all kinds, our university and a foreign exchange program DH participated in when he was a teenager.

What's our vice??? - high end steak houses and dive-diners! We don't think twice about a weekly family dinner at BLT, Morton's, Capital Grille etc...

Am I unapologetically rich? Yes - but then again no one knows that we are so I have no one to apologize to!

You don't live the way I would live with that income but what I like about you is that you don't seem smudge or judgmental at all - unlike other people. You seem very live and let live.

HHI 275k

No household debt, no credit card debt. Townhouse paid off, have second rentail property. Got in before the market went crazy back in 2001.

No money in 529, plan to pay for childs education via interest earned off investments. Not like you every want to touch the principal.

About 950k networth, but age 33. Could afford all sorts of fancy stuff, but don't need it. I'd prefer to be totally financially independent in a few years (easily doable since our costs for living are about 20k a year). Save 90% post tax income.

We don't spend money as we are in the wealth accumlation phase. My wife would rather get $1,000 in dividends than a purse.

Roll income from rental property into tax advantaged SEP IRA.

The secret? My wife still lives like she did when she was on her PhD stipend. We basically live like the those featured millionare next door book. You'd never know our income/net worth from looking at us.
