You do realize you are talking to several posters, yes? What are you considering "histrionics"? Remember this is a cultural issue. If the discussion was about tattooing your newborn and some people vehemently disagreed with it would you say that they were unstable? What if it was about piercing your newborn's nose? |
so then basically I should only surround myself with other observant Jews, less I be judged by someone for something that's really none of their business?
That's pretty closed minded. There are so many other reasons to judge someone (based on DCUM), like formula feeding, not being a SAHM, or having a c-section! |
I think you should focus on raising your own child, not how others handle their response to their own cultures/religions. I guess I do not understand the Christian American fear of "the other". |
Really to the bolded? I've never met a man who cared about whether he was circumcised or not. Actually when I talked about this to one of my good guy friends he thought the whole discussion was nuts. He's gay and has no desire to have children so he is completely unaware of the mommy wars over things like natural childbirth, breastfeeding, and, of course everyone's favorite topic, circumcision. So I tell him about some of this stuff. Anyway, he told me he is circ'd and he never thought anything about it. He actually said he had a friend who got circ'd as an adult because he didn't like the look of his penis. I personally don't think any penis ever looks attractive but more power to him. lol I'm always curious when I hear about these guys who are so upset about their parents' decision to have them circumcised because it's just not something I've ever heard. FTR, I have two boys - one circ'd and one not. |
The people who care what other parents do with respect to circing. All weirdos and unstable. There is a lot of overlap with that group and anti-vaxers. |
Let's take a look at this: Vaccinations -- many are evidence based and have saved lives. Circumcision -- no compelling medical evidence. I follow evidence based practice. My kids are vaccinated if there is research that backs that up (as there frequently, but not always is). My kids are not cut because there is no compelling reason do to it and many compelling reasons to leave them as perfect as they were born. If you want to discuss vaccinations more thoroughly, I suggest you start your own thread. |
Every anti-vax person I know is also anti-circ. |
There are plenty of people who don't vaccinate because of cultural reasons. Don't kid yourself.
The difference is, your unvaccinated child puts my child at risk of serious illness...while my circumcised child poses no risk to anyone (except maybe some of the clearly anti-semetic posters on here) |
That is not the same as all anti-circ people being anti-vax at all. All dalmations have spots, but certainly not every dog with spots is a dalmation. |
Absolutely false that circs don't have medical value. You truly haven't done your research if you think this is true. |
What happened was the shift from aap against to for circ has gotten alot of parents upset that they used the previous advisement. They were looking for ways to justify out and if you are already mentally unstable you will go crazy telling people to stop circs and make up evidence. Of course the weird fringe groups like intact male etc.... Only fan the flames of the wackos. This is similar to the false vaccine autism hysteria. In the end there is a medical benefit mainly from a better sanitary environment. |
I have a daughter, so (unlike the weirdly nosy PP), I do not have a dog in this fight. That said, I do not buy that this is in any way related to the "Christian American fear of the other" that you mention. What started as a religious practice is now basically the medical mainstream. If this was something that was purely cultural, it would approximately match the population doing it for religious reasons, which is not the case at all. |
Honestly, that is some junk thinking. And your conclusions are equally ridiculous. It is a medical choice. |
Right. Which is why I typed it the way I did. I scored very high on the SATs! |
The marginal medical benefits, if there are any, do not warrant child mutilation. As for religion, God also said to stone adulterers but I do not see much of that going on in North America. |
