Moving to DC. Which neighborhoods should we look at?

Another vote for Takoma Park, MD or it's sister neighborhood across the border Takoma, DC. It's not urban but very walkable with lots of amenities including libraries, pools, farmers markets, co-op groceries, cafes, restaurants, post office, toy store, hardware store, clothing stores, and a great non-traditional movie rental place.

Here is a link to a Yahoo group serving Takoma families:

Could everybody please, please avoid Virginia? We have already a million and don't need anymore. Truly a horrible place to live! Especailly Mclean and Vienna -- overcrowded. Awful. Go to DC or MD.

In Virginia, maybe Del Ray?

OP, consider Del Ray. It has everything you're looking for. Great neighborhood, great families, crunchy leanings, safe, good preschools, reasonably priced, and close to public transit. The other areas that PP mentioned aren't nearly as nice as del ray.
