outer banks v. virginia beach v. rehoboth

Cape May, NJ is my favorite beach. We are from Baltimore and grew up going there instead of Ocean City. It is such a quiet, relaxed town. It is so safe, kids ride bikes alone all over town and was so chill. You can drive up to Wildwood for some boardwalk, Jersey Shore action, but mostly, we just stuck to Cape May.

When we were kids, we spent the whole day at the beach and ran around with all of our friends at night. We did not need activities because we just played with other kids.

Ocean City , NJ is really much nicer than Ocean City , MD. The Outer Banks is not just one place. It takes a whole day to drive from one end to the other. I have stayed in Corolla (very far out), and Southern Shores (good central location) and Kitty Hawk, right in the middle of the action, but beaches are not as nice as further north. The southern part is slower very different.

We found a 3 bedroom house a block from the beach in Southern Shores for about $1000/ week. I could not find comparable in Ocean City or any of the nearby beaches.

+1
where did that come from? It's almost exclusively young families. Maybe PP was thinking of Dewey, which we avoid.

The Sleazy OP might be a homophobe.

Oooohhhhh, maybe so. That didn't occur to me. I love Rehoboth.

Well, seeing men in black leather kissing may not be what some parents want their kids to see.

I have gone to Rehoboth every August for the last 20 years, pre kids and with kids, and often with some gay friends. I have never EVER seen men in black leather kissing. I have seen middle aged gay men in tasteful beachwear kissing and some of them have been in my beach house. My kids don't seem too traumatized.

OBX and OC have white people that think the beaches belong to them. OBX got those white people that think it is a gem and don't want to share with minorities.

Cancun is way better because people that appreciate different culture and share with people.

How did you find the rental house/which website did you use? Thanks!

I like Southern Shores Realty. But most of the houses are closer to 2k than 1k.

All those luxury cars parked everywhere.

They never complain that they're bored and they're currently elementary/middle and high school age. We do rent a large house with other families; right on the beach and with a pool. The beaches are beautiful and private. I can't fathom the thought of taking three little kids to Rehobeth or Ocean City and dealing with the enormous crowds on the beach - you couldn't relax for a second. But obviously everybody has different preferences. We go to the beach to get away from everything, some people enjoy the crowds and the boardwalk.

Rehoboth is very serene and peaceful...ANYTIME I go it isn't crowded like Ocean City is...And it's much more laid back, with a beautiful boardwalk. So if you love being at a peaceful beach, I don't see why you wouldn't like Rehoboth.

Rehoboth is quiet cheese to me. I prefer OBX.

I meant "Cheesy"

I'm not saying OBX doesn't gave cheesey areas, because it has many of them. And after spending two summers there, I got tired of those rednecks saying "you have an accent, where are you from?". This summer I will spend two weeks in Marbella.

Currently enjoying my week long vacation in VA Beach. Where you stay depends on if it's sleazy or not. We're staying on the North End, which is nicer. Ocean City is ok, when we want to go somewhere closer. Never been to the other beaches.

Just got back from a few days @ VB. Wife hates it, the kids (teens) and I love it - we can skate, roller blade, swim, surf etc .. No poo poo water, and it was fairly warm. VB is not for everybody; it's sleazy on the strip at night with lots of strange characters around. Wouldn't recommend it for the younger kids. If you want more of a family type vacation go a little further south to Sandbridge.

OBX is way fun if you're into water sports, skimboard, surfing, etc... The water can be dangerous for younger kids, know someone who lost their 11yr old son to an under tow a few years ago. It happen in the blink of an eye.....so if you're not a strong swimmer, please becareful

Rohomo, don't like the water unless you're surfing or skimboarding or sponging, it's not a beach I want to swim in. Poo poo water, prefer Lewes or the DE park beaches to it. It's more suited to going by the beach but not for the water, but for the mini board walk, restaurants and entertainment, plus you can always drive over to OC, Dewey etc, so lot of options.

They're all r very different and each has there own appeal.

MB is by far the best for a true family vacation. IMHO.
