Marshall Road ES (full day Kinder)

But still, you made no comment about the middle school your kids will go to? Luther Jackson? Or Thoreau? Let's see, if your kids go to Thoreau then they are going to a great school according to greatschools. Oh, wait, is greatschools relevant for middle schools? Please enlighten me. So if your kids feed into Thoreau that must mean they aren't in AAP, which means your great elementary school did not do as good of a job educating them as you thought. Or it means you chose not to go to an AAP center. But AAP centers have better peer groups than regular schools, so you do have a problem deciding which school to choose in that case, don't you?

Please do everyone a favor and move into a Langley pyramid where all of the schools are great.

Blah, blah, blah...you are such a whiner.

HS ratings should also factor in SAT scores and % of kids getting passing scores on AP exams. None of that is factored into the great schools rating.

Get a clue.

Maybe the kids at Cunningham Park drop out.

I have a clue. And Langley's scores are much better than Madison's - SAT scores, AP, or SOLs. In fact I'd say Langley's are great while Madison's are good. Both are fine, though. But why move into an area where the schools are good when you can have great? Move to Langley.

You should ask yourself that, instead of saying everything's fine.

I'm happy with good. That's why my kids will go to Madison. I don't need great. Have a good night.

Here’s how the McLean and Vienna-area HS compare (overall, suggests people ought to be pretty happy with all these schools, but guess it goes without saying there’s a fair amount of one-upsmanship on this forum). Marshall Road ES feeds into Madison and Oakton HS.

GreatSchools (based on SOL results)

Langley 9
Marshall 9
Oakton 9
McLean 8
Madison 8
South Lakes 3

SATs (graduating seniors in 2010; test scores and rankings in terms of 25 FCPS HS; all above state/national averages)

Langley 1812 – 2
McLean 1778 – 3
Madison 1734 – 5
Oakton 1729 – 6
Marshall 1690 – 7
South Lakes 1578 – 16

US News (based on test scores, including AP/IB exams, but adjusted based on % of lower-income students)

Langley - #47 nationally (Gold Medal)
Madison – Silver Medal
Marshall – Silver Medal
McLean – Honorable Mention
Oakton – Not Recognized
South Lakes – Not Recognized

Challenge Index (based on % of students taking AP/IB exams – rankings based on 172 local schools)

McLean – 16
Langley – 17
Madison – 20
Oakton – 23
Marshall – 30
South Lakes - 34

How did South Lakes make the "pretty happy" list?

It has SAT scores well above state/national averages, and the "Challenge Index" ranking indicates that there are plenty of advanced courses available to students.

Admittedly, the GreatSchools rating is low, but others have suggested that excessive reliance should not be placed on such ratings with respect to high schools.

The Challenge Index should be renamed the "Useless Challenge Index."

My main negative though of Marshall Road does not relate to K, but rather the AAP center it feeds to is Mosby Woods. Nothing against Mosby Woods, but if the child is involved in any activities in the community (sports, etc), they will know kids from other schools in Vienna (Vienna is a close-nit community). All of the other Vienna schools feed into Louise Archer.

So, my DD started third grade AAP, and knew about 20 children from other schools starting AAP. (Louise Archer is DD's base school). She also has two friends from Marshall Road that are not at LA, but in Marshall roads LLIV.

When I read some of the reasons people give for commenting negatively on local schools, I think Vienna must be both a close-nit and a close-knit community.

Reality is sometimes considered negativity, but it's still reality.
