Daughter and friend play dress up - in hajib

Yes, drink the blood of your savior. Make sure to have your children pray to an old man in the sky who watches their every move and sends them to a firey place if they do not obey his rules written on stone.

Oh...but yes, Muslims and Jews are odd because they cover themselves out of respect for their lord.

Did you actually READ this thread? Because we are specifically talking about religious based gender discrimination here. More accurately, my feeling of discomfort when my American, secular daughter was prancing around the house in a hijab. Not the other absurdities of Judeo-Christian religions, which I agree are legion.

No one argued that Muslims or Jews are odd because they cover themselves. I am asking - why do women need to cover up more than men. Are you capable of responding to that question or do you just want to continue to mock the discussion?

Why do women in the West need to cover up less than men?

If that's what you're really wondering, why not go do some (Google) research on the subject rather than asking DCUM? Look for academic writings on the historical/religious reason wear hijab, modern arguments MADE BY MUSLIM WOMEN against wearing hijab, and modern arguments MADE BY MUSLIM WOMEN for wearing hijab.

Exactly. I love it when people obsess over other the "ignorance" of other cultures and just pretend like the USA is a nation of gender, racial, and sexuality equality.

How do women need to cover up less than men in the West? In the US as far as I know, in most places:

There are three areas that a woman MUST cover: genitals, anus, and nipples.
There are two areas a male must cover: Genitals and anus.

Situational fashions aside, these are the spots that must be covered or, you are getting arrested. So what are you talking about? The fact that I can wear a knee length skirt suit to work if I want? I can also choose a pant suit.

There's a difference between fashion choices and religious dictates/laws enforced by the state.

The US is also a country where women can get fired from jobs (particularly, for some reason, if one is an airplane attendant) for not wearing makeup, being overweight, and looking old.

Yes, of course there's some difference between fashion choice and a state- (or family-) enforced dress code. But women who don't follow fashion face negative social and professional consequences.

You're still effectively required to be eye candy at work, even in a pantsuit. Your costume will still have a defined waist and a neckline that's more open than a man's. Your jacket will likely be a bit shorter to reveal a little trousered ass, and if there's any curve to your hips and thighs, it'll show because your pants will be more fitted in the seat than a man's. Chances are your shoe will reveal at least some instep if not your carefully pedicured toes.

I don't see why it helps you to get your knickers in a twist about women covering up... especially because if your knickers are indeed twisted, your whole office will be able to tell when you walk past.

Meanwhile, the men in your office will be completely covered in generally rectangular, relatively loose-fitting garments from the middle of their necks to the floor, with only their hands sticking out.

to PP---LOL don't take it so seriously.

Thank you, PP 10:38. If anything, it sucks that women in the USA are expected to be both more (no showing of bare breasts) and less covered up (tighter fitting clothing, cleavage, etc.).

You're crazy.

I don't care what you wear.

But, the point of some of the posters seems to be this: yes there are cultural differences in clothing. I don't concede that all women in the US wear "less" clothes than men and that assumption is utterly ridiculous.

Regardless of what women choose to wear/not wear: they are not going to be shunned the way they are in some religious circles or other countries. I'm not talking about work dress codes (though even then, "shunned" is not something I've ever seen.) I think that is the difference.

I'm not 13:52, but what is wrong with being covered, and having American features? I'm an American- Muslim, originally from California. I have NEVER lived anywhere but the U.S. Every Muslim woman I know takes off her hijab when she is inside her home too.
My family isn't from the Middle East. My husband is a black man, who's family has only lived in DC. He doesn't force me to wear hijab. He doesn't force me to dress modestly.
@13:52 Thank you.

What the f*ck are "American" features you dolt?!

I obviously meant Western, because that's what was in bold ASSHOLE!

I don't see "Western", I see "American features", DUMB bitch!

Yup. Talk to Hillary Clinton bout that. This from fuglies like Letterman. He has a face and body made for radio not tv. Actually, if he were a woman, he might not even be physically presentable enough to keep a job at his age.

When I see a woman wearing a hijab - It has never crossed my mind that perhaps she is being oppressed.....on the contrary, I find them strong and brave woman for doing what they want to do regardless of what others thing and holding their ground to their beliefs. I actually find it more of a feminist move and saying - I am not going to let you judge or like me for how I look.
(I know they wear it for religion, but in my mind these woman are much BOLDER in every aspect) Kudos to them for doing what they want.
