OP indicated that their DC was interested in athletics. Based on DC’s experience, I would recommend caution with cross-country/track and field. The coach leaves a lot to be desired. No idea on other teams.

Other DC went to a Claremont college and was also very happy with academics. I would say they probably had a better college experience, perhaps because they were not involved in athletics. And the consortium really is everything it’s cracked up to be.

DS is being recruited for XS right now. Considering ED2. Please tell me more about Coach Bartlett so we know what he's walking into.

First, if Coach is encouraging early decision, he will completely support the pre-read so no worries there.

I would say main issue is that he’s not very supportive during the season except for the very top 2-3 runners. Now, this would not be surprising for d1, but this is a typical D3 team and the XC team in particular is not huge. On the bright side, the workouts are on really great paths on the hills and arroyos around campus. If your DS is likely to be one of the fastest and/or his incoming class group is close and supportive, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Track is a larger team with more assistants so it isn’t as much of an issue.

I would not let this be a deciding factor if he likes Oxy otherwise; obviously he can form his own impressions as a freshman and decide whether to continue. The academics are great, the opportunities for research or internships in the summer are excellent, and if your DS is thinking poly sci, the UN internship semester is unique.

Eek. Another parent of a recruit.
