I'm fascinated by people who still think being a WASP/old money is aspirational. A lot of these people are broke. And now that we (thankfully) live in a society with a little more equity, you don't need to be a WASP, you just need to have money.

I have a friend who constantly puts on this air of faux-self-deprecation about being a WASP, not genuine self-deprecation but as if she's just reminding you she's a WASP. It's bizarre.

- STA/NCS (but more Holton lately)
- Ivy for smarties/athletes, mid-tier northeast lib arts for the rest, UVA/UNC/Vandy/Duke for Southerners, Sewanee/Trinity for non-academically inclined
- Commercial real estate
- Met Club, Sulgrave, CCC
- MV, Nantucket, Gibson Island, Jackson Hole, Maine

Trump is now attacking legacy admission to the Ivies! He is the definition of evil.

Trump, Barron, and Melania were rejected by all of these people. That’s why he hates them. He seeks vengeance.

They're not really Cave Dwellers (although surely some of their parents and grand-parents were) -- very few seem to work for the administration or in the government. In fact, they seem apolitical unless you count wearing a Barbour jacket as a religion. The most common threads I've been able to discern is that most are white and either from DC or the South, they all know each other well, and even though I know there are other exclusive country clubs out there, they are basically all members of the Chevy Chase Club. Who are these people: where is the money from, how were they raised, and how do they spend their time?

OP, I can think of three families I know that fit your description exactly. In all cases, the parents, now in their 70s and 80s, are from prominent families from other places. The parents are HYP/Seven Sisters educated and they arrived in DC in their 20s with strong family and school connections, probably with some Cave Dweller families. Those connections steered them into the right schools, right clubs, right neighborhoods. Their kids, now in their 40s and 50s are just continuing on. They are legacies at the private schools and got junior membership at Chevy. Their moms insist they hold onto a Sulgrave membership even though they barely use it. The Met is used by the husband for business.

I think "right clubs" is an over statement. Lots of Maga belongs to Chevy and Met Club if that gives you any idea of their members. Think of former Fox anchor that recently promoted a very well known anti-semite.

People of all faiths (Protestant, Jewish) who cared about money voted for Trump, whether they discussed it or not.

Don’t care why. Just how in gods name can he justify attacking legacy? HOW?!?

He is truly a monster.

A friend belongs to one of these clubs and was invited to a “meet up” with some other ladies. She arrived and it turned out to be a meeting of women trying to get others to write negative letters about a woman applying for membership. When she asked them why they didn’t like her - none of them could give a concrete answer or example. They didn’t like her because.

This is what you are dealing with. The mean girls in middle school….

Idk, I have a friend in one of those clubs mentioned and I don't see the people she knows from there going to enough trouble to do that. Lazy dolts riding their coattails on daddy's money.

That is great that your friend does not seem like that but there are others that absolutely do engage in that behavior. They rally against certain people that they are threatened against. Saw them do it to a man in DC trying to get in - he is very handsome and younger than many of the others at the time and I think the dads were jealous. They blackballed him. Really bizarre. Yes it absolutely happened even though would can't imagine adults actually behaving this way.

This happens at every club and private school, it isn’t notable.

Pretty much this. Messes with money. Think Kennedys.

The Kennedys are a whole different subculture.

Kennedys aren’t Wasps.

Yes, my very elderly cousin has that accent, but her daughter, who is closer to my age, does not.* I also know someone at church, from an extremely old DC family, who has the same accent. He’s nearing 90. It’s fascinating.

*I digress, but elderly cousin’s mother was a wild Tidewater debutante who cursed like a sailor. She was my staid, prim grandmother’s very favorite relative.

That doesn’t make any sense if you’re claiming your “old money 10 generation NOVA” DH’s family is from here (and never left) for that long. The piedmont of Virginia and the accent is from Richmond, which sounds NOTHING like northern Virginia. Not now, not a few generations ago and not 10.

It’s also completely different from Tidewater. So not buying it.

This thread isn't about wasps, though, it's about old money vs. new money. Kennedys are definitely old money now.

DP but I'm from Virginia and Loudoun and Fauquier Cos. count as the Piedmont. Piedmont Environmental Council, for example, is headquartered in Warrenton.

When she said Northern Virginia I assumed she meant Middleburg area. Ten generations in Middleburg is nice, no one would brag about ten generations in like, Fairfax or something.
