I live in the H street area. Crime is no better now than it was before. In particular, I've seen no improvement in drug use and it's public effects. The same "problem corners" where people use, buy/sell, and hang around on drugs exist, and neither the NG nor Trump's other efforts have done anything about it.
This problem got very bad during and immediately after the pandemic. I'd say it was already down from it's peaked (maybe 2022?) when Trump was reelected. His actions have done nothing to further improvement be it though. The NG are totally superfluous around here. Neither harmful nor helpful. Given the expense, and the weirdness of being in an American city patrolled by military (and not in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or other national security crisis, but just because), it's nuts to me they are still here. I would love to hear from the mayor and police chief what they are doing about the continued drug problem. I also think off leash dogs are a real issue in my neighborhood, and know multiple people who have sustained dog bites in the last 6 months without animal control doing anything to address it. I'd love to see the city (not trump, and not the NG) address these public health and safety issues. |
I have likewise not seen anything concrete or tangible in terms of the city getting better. The city still has to keep imposing curfews to keep mobs of teens from brawling and harrassing people, the city still has its notorious corners and open air drug markets and tweakers holding up traffic to try and panhandle. |

There is no doubt that crime has decreased. I mean, it's in the numbers, and also in a gut-check way, i feel much safer walking around Shaw and safer sending my tween-aged kids to walk by themselves.
Saying this out loud, however, results in a hysterical reaction from our white neighbors. Brown and black citizens (we are in this category) don't have a problem admitting that it is safer. Brown non-citizens are terrified. |
The brown non-citizens weren't the ones committing most of the crime. |
There is no doubt crime has gone up. |
Statistics will come out. |

One less gangbanger on the streets of D.C. thanks to a MPD & federal task force response to a request from community members to patrol an area where gunshots had been heard.

I voted for this. |
Can you trust anything that Trump and maga get their hands on? |
Are the NG patrolling in Shaw? I haven’t seen them in Brookland. Theft from our CVS is still outrageous, and a young woman was mugged and beaten by a group of people near the metro last month. I see the NG pretty regularly at Gallery Place station and in the Navy Yard area, neither of which felt unsafe before or more safe now. So I’m curious how the NG is making a difference in Shaw. |
| my coworker's car was broken into in the middle of the day in SE, so it feels the same to me. |

I don't think they accomplished much but at least there was some visibility. I'm more annoyed that it was a monumental waste of millions and millions in taxpayer dollars.
But now a judge has ruled the deployments were illegal so at least the money bleed will slow down. |
| You know there are actual murder stats that you can view instead of judging everything by way of your personal anecdotes, right? |
Are you seriously saying a place like Navy Yard - that has a juvenile curfew in place and where there have been multiple carjackings resulting in murders - felt safe? Safe compared to where? Were you walking around there at 10 am on a Sunday morning? https://www.fox5dc.com/news/washington-dc-curfew-navy-yard-fight-nov-1-2025.amp
