The Diplomat-Season 3

He's a pretty good actor. Have you seen this: Man in the high castle?

I liked the scene where Keri eyes the woman playing her body double and says something to the effect that, you know, my hair is not actually dirty… and I do brush it.

Clearly the writers were reading online comments about Keri’s hair in the first two seasons. My friend and I laughed at that scene.

I like this show and this season is the best yet, IMO. However, I cannot stand that on this show (and I had the same complaint on Scandal), the strong, smart lead character chooses to be tied to a self-centered, not as bright putz.

I don't see him as a "not as bright putz." He's calculating and smart and manipulative and, I agree (obviously) self-centered. But I don't think he's dumb or not bright.

I get your point although I said “not as bright” (and I don’t think his character is as bright as Keri Russell’s - his is more savvy/political), but he can’t hold a candle to her and his first priority is almost always himself, so I hate seeing smart women teamed with men like that.

- I thought there was going to be something with bodyguard. Or maybe that’s just a plot device to keep Kate’s romantic options open?
- Callum isn’t to be trusted. He’s too cute and jumpy.
- Typical Hal. We like him, then he screws Kate. Repeat.

- and just recap, who knows that Grace Penn ordered the attack? Grace, Billie, Hal, Kate and Eidra? That’s it?

Also, I love Mrs. Munning (the housekeeper). She has so much pride and cares for her country and for Kate. She’s awesome.

+1
And I was stunned to realize that Pensy, Mrs. Munning's assistant, played Lucy in the Narnia movie (Georgie Henley)!

Hal is a self-centered douchebag who will steamroller anyone to get his way, Kate included. Perfectly cast; Rufus Sewell plays manipulative creeps exceptionally well.

+1
Frankly, I can't stand Hal and was disgusted when she went back to him. Why, Kate?? He is a narcissist of the first order and so obnoxious.

Yes but remember they were together in season 1. She broke up with him then. So it’s not that surprising in season 3, although an odd match.

I can't stand the way Eidra talks. Very flat, monotone, always sarcastic, never smiles. There is no spark or anything interesting to her. Stuart is a bit odd looking, but at least he has a personality.

I absolutely love Alison Janney and this is a great role for her.

Yes, this season was totally implausible at times. It’s not realistic. But that didn’t bother me.

+1
Bradley Whitford made me laugh as her husband.

Check out Borgen if you want to watch an actually good show in that vein.

So, garbage for smug dummies who erroneously think they’re super bright.

The West Wing was never close to touching the hem of The Wire or anything else actually good. I love Keri Russell but this show makes me want to just rewatch The Americans.

If you don’t like dialogue (strategy, negotiation)…then maybe choose shows that aren’t titled, “The Diplomat.”

I suggest Demolition Derby or Shock and Awe.
That way you won’t have to discuss the show online with smug smarties.

DP

But the point is that the strategy/negotiation really falls short this season.

I mean, nothing big happens all season.

And the big solution Kate suggests at the beach house was so predictable that I thought it made everyone else seem stupid. And the big press conference at the beach was also predictable. Ditto for what happens with the sub.

Moreover, Kate really came across as a selfish jerk this season.

The focus was on relationships this time...

The whole point of this season is that Kate is realizing how similar she is to Hal. He is not more self-centered than she is. In fact, he was willing to put his own career on the back burner for her, something the she was incredibly reluctant to do.

The reality is Kate is the a-hole.

I don't care what his character is like, I can watch Rufus forever.

I enjoy the show but--VP's wife/ambassador to the UK planning to negotiate with the Saudis re: oil leases in the North Sea? Not even that, seems like throughout the show she drives in 5 lanes.

Will the ship attack thing ever rear its head again? It's Iran/no it's Russia/no it's Lemkov/no it's the PM/no its Meg Riolan/no it's the VP was certainly nuts.

She had already done it for years in their relationship - her becoming Ambassador to GB finally was supposed to be “her turn.”
