I think the point is that since all of the J6ers were pardoned, and we’re even willing to pay those who were clearly behaving illegally for the consequences of their actions, it is clear that violent insurrection is ok with the current Republican administration.

It’s not that it’s actually ok for liberals - it’s the fact that it is clearly ok for Republicans that is a problem.

I don't know how much clearer I can be: the J6 protesters who were in any way involved in violence against law enforcement should serve lengthy sentences in harsh conditions. The reality is that this riot went on for quite a long time. At the beginning, of course the officers tried to peacefully quell the situation and resolve it without force. The left noticed how chummy the Capitol Police were and in the immediate aftermath, were calling the Capitol Police traitors who facilitated the incident. You are a liar. Our neighbor was there that day, and for days after, and he was traumatized. He was a shell of a man for weeks after and slept at a hotel downtown.

It was absolutely traumatizing for the police. We are in violent agreement about that. However, the fact remains that they did what they were TRAINED to do, which is to be welcoming. I'm in no way claiming that they enjoyed the situation or that it wasnt horrific for them. And my Capitol Police friend was extremely shaken for months. But I am able to understand that if people are welcomed in, they may not understand they are trespassing.

You also absolutely suck as a friend. Our other neighbor prosecuted these guys at DOJ and he said it was excruciating to have these officers on stand reliving the day. I dare you to tell your “friend” you think anyone who was trespassing shouldn’t receive jail time. So gross. And that this has to be explained over and over to you.

Your neighbor sounds dramatic. I used to be an AUSA, too. That's the job of a prosecutor - making people relive the worst experiences of their lives in front of a potentially hostile audience.
