Same here. Very watchable and makes you think. I'm probably 10 yrs younger than the characters. |
Just finished. Maybe not a masterpiece but we enjoyed it and watched it quickly. There were a few laugh out loud moments per episode. Colman Domingo is a really great actor/performer and it was fun to watch him. I liked how they showed the good and bad sides of each character. As you get older it’s harder to reel in your worse traits and it’s nice to be loved and appreciated for your good ones. That’s why old friends are so valuable! |
I knew I knew her from somewhere but I didn't realize she was Trudy!!! |
I'm 45 so around the target demographic for the show. I think there were some golden one-liners:
Kate (talking about Ginny): I mean, she's young and hot Jack: I don't think see a lot of upside for me for answering that I love Steve Carell so I had a hard time hating him and I thought he handled Lila's anger well I couldn't stand Claude for the most part, although I thought his point about Danny choosing a real marriage was valid, otherwise he was just a trope I thought Anne was hysterical and sweet (not being able to get on the boat, the tombstone platter, flirting with the surf instructor) I liked Kate and Jack a lot although some moments weren't done as well as they could have been. But her mumbling under her breath that he's a grown ass man and can figure out his own hunger was so real The throuple was stupid and unnecessary I'd give it a solid B. I'm not sorry I watched it and I laughed out loud a few times, but I also found myself on my phone during some scenes and I'm glad it was only 8 episodes. |
I thought their relationship was realistic. Steve Carrell is really hot for an older guy, and he had a lot of money and was super into her. She made the point that the young guys she dated were not caring at all -- I can see a woman in her early thirties just being really exhausted by the perpetual adolescence of the guys her age. Picking a guy that's more like 40 is more common (I know sooooo many 40 year old guys who married 30 year old women!), but Steve C at 55 looks more like 45. Did you see him with his shirt off? He's one of those guys that looks better at 55 than he did at 35. |
Let's hear it from my Beacon peeps! (And good luck to your kid at Vassar!) I liked it a lot. Steve Carrell is a really talented actor -- makes me a little sad he stayed on the office as long as he did, where I think his talents were kind of wasted. I was a little frustrated with the Tina Fey/Will Forte dynamic -- I really wanted her to be nicer to him. (My spouse is something of the opposite of a Will Forte, and I think I felt jealous of her being with this dopey sweet guy who just wants to do nice things for her even if he isn't super competent all the time.) And the young GF did a really good job being charming and giving her character some depth. Now I want to watch the original. I absolutely ADORE Alan Alda, and have since I was about 4 years old. About an hour after I saw it, I suddenly thought of a really sticky legal and/or ethical problem that the ending poses. I dont' want to say it outright, because I don't want to spoil the ending, but those of you who saw it might be able to guess what I'm thinking. What a mess! |
I'm about the same age as Kate/Anne, and I couldn't help thinking that Anne looked her age (like me), but that Kate/Tina looks great! I wish I'd done whatever she's done to her face/skin because she still looks like herself. She's another one that was not particularly hot for a 20 year old, but is pretty hot for a 55 year old. |
I thought it was terrible and hard to watch. |
Alan Alda was the only good part |
Yes! It will depend. Hopefully, he worked with professionals who put that in as a matter of best practice. That could be one of the themes in season 2. |
Agree, I think Tina looks amazing. I often find it distracting to watch actresses who look great but have clearly had a ton of work done to preserve their former “hotness” - meanwhile Tina looks great with the fairly normal face and body she’s always had. Her hair color also looked really nice and shiny. |
+1 I thought it was a very realistic relationship for that age gap. She is very pretty but portrayed as pretty "mature" - she was a good character and not a total cliche. He is clearly rich but still looks good too. |
+1 she looks great but also looks right for that age role. Whatever works she's had done is subtle and she's not trying to look super young. |
Finishing it up now. It’s entertaining, nothing profound. The Anne character seems the most out of place. She looks 1
At least 10 years older that the cast and her hair stylist should be fired. |
I thought it was very astute and unusual for how incisively it looked at middle age and long relationships - both friendships and marriages
Colman Domingo is phenomenal and Steve Carrell is great. Thought the rest of the acting was so so. It was an easy watch and i.could happily have settled into hours more of it, even without the big twists. |
