Do you think our graduating seniors will have a normal college experience?

What happens to these departments at private selective colleges:

Public Policy (I’d assume it would grow or be safe)
History (stable?)
Classics (already tiny?)
Anthropology

Public policy is going to be defunded if project 2025 continues.

Again, no one knows what the budget will look like so nothing is certain, except that some research grants have already been cancelled and few new grants are going out. The NIH overhead cut is currently the subject of a lawsuit as only Congress has the authority to change that.

If the House budget becomes law in its current form, it will be disastrous for universities, and their academic medical centers, as well as rural hospitals. So lobby your electeds accordingly.

What does project 2025 say about colleges and universities

What does this mean? Why not research?[/quhaveny

Haven’t you heard? Those grants have been canceled.

Yes. All college internships with govt agencies have been called off.

Kids getting arrested for stating their opinions- that is- if the opinions are not fact to the current administration. No more free speech.

Things like classes or clubs or organizations that could be deemed as DEI not being allowed anymore, for example Women’s studies, Women in Economics club, Black (or any ethnic group) Engineers, etc.

DEI also includes handicapped and special needs.

My god, wake up and see what is happening. I have a kid in college right now. All science research internships this summer have been canceled. ALL. Ongoing research projects have halted. This is at a private college. The same is true at our state schools. Graduate programs are announcing drastic cuts to the number of students they will accept for stem programs next year.

Np- I completely agree. My college kid at a private has a lot of friends whose research grants just got pulled for the summer.

Me, too.

He's cutting all the funding and grants. Anything with the word "woman" or "female" or "diverse" or "environment" especially. I guess anything with the word "male" may survive as long as no "females" are studied or referenced in the same work. Nearly all NSF grants and other grants are frozen or "paused".

Honestly it’s worse than that. Sometimes words like “diversity” are used in a scientific context and not at all pertaining to people and those are flagged and rejected. And here’s an example, albeit in a different setting: there was a neuroscience conference recently and there was a researcher’s poster about “diversity of afferent firing in the cochlea”. What that means is how nerves fire inside the ear in varying ways. Dudes in MAGA hats tore down the posters just because they saw the word, “diverse”. It’s just madness.

So anyway stem is out. I don’t know what a safe major is.

We are in such a dumb timeline.

Sometimes you have to look around and see why the wind is blowing, check the the radar

Quick, before you get charged for that by one of Trump’s buddies.

This will cause major brain drain. Many of the students interested in becoming researcher will either choose something else or move abroad because America refuses to fund them and accept them socially. American intellectualism is on a steep and harsh decline.

I just happy my daughter will get away from DC. If you live in the DC area, it is just a daily onslaught of everything politics and the resulting turmoil.

This, exactly. My DD has a couple of international options -- not clear yet if she will choose one of those schools or something else, but in any event she will be out of the DMV, which I think will be good for her mental health.
