White supremacy. |
Fits with not really being school about community and family. Most schools give sibling preference because they want to be the family's school of choice and because they recognize that having to jungle more than one independent school can creates logistical issues for families. While I get that it may not make for accepting the most "on paper" desirable candidates, it creates loyalty and good will among families/alums. But Bullis just isn't that type of school. |
Sometimes, students from within the same family need different things. And unfortunately some students, even from the same family, may not be a good fit for the same school. Schools that have choices can afford to make decisions based on what they perceive to be in the student's and the school's best interests. And the competitive schools have been doing this for ages. Bullis is getting noticed for this because they are now so much more competitive than they have ever been. |
Unavoidably we couldn't make the upper school admitted students' event last night. I'd really appreciate any insights from families that were in attendance. Thanks. |
Bullis was not our top choice initially, but DD now wants to go there. Still not my top choice - I want GDS for her. But I understand why it compelling for her. |
I thought pretty much everyone gets into Bullis. When did it become so competitive? |
When they opened in September 2020 and no other school around here, including ours, had the sense to do so. |
We were there last night. Campus and classrooms obviously beautiful, but more importantly, the teachers were very impressive. Upper School assistant head is a kid magnet. We don't have anyone like that in leadership at our school. We are looking forward to decisions tomorrow, but Bullis is our top choice right now. |
It was a very nice event. The first part was mingling with fellow admitted students, with light appetizers and lemonade, followed by a wonderful presentation in the theater by student dancers and the student company of the spring musical, Chicago. The upper school jazz band also played. Talented kids! Three current seniors were the emcees of the evening. The head of school spoke along with the assistant director of college counseling (or something like that, didn't catch his exact title, but he was very engaging). The second half of the evening was meeting with teachers in the various disciplines and learning about the curriculum, activities, etc. My DC came away from the evening super pumped for Bullis. There were a lot of current students there to talk to, along with upper school teachers. The head of school said this year was a record year for applications and the lowest acceptance rate in the school's history. He also said that four years ago they made a strategic decision to grow the school but they've hit that goal now. Incoming 9th grade class will be a little smaller than the past couple of years. All in all, Bullis made for a very welcoming environment last night. I'm sure you can call with any questions you may have. They encouraged families to reach out. |
That sounds like a very well planned and useful event! |
We had similar experience at the lower school event. Very welcoming staff and teachers. We loved it so much that we enrolled already. |
Congrats! As a new LS family this year, we have found the school to be amazing. Very welcoming, kind and well run. My child loves going to school each day. No complaints! |
Current parent here— glad to have all of you! We’ve been at bullis since pre-COVID and have loved it. I grew up here so know the old Bullis reputation. I have no idea whether it was deserved back then or not but we have loved every year of our children’s experience. And the person Op was referencing is Phil Weisgold who does college admissions but is also the assistant head of US. He’s wonderful. |
This all sounds very staged. |
Of course it’s staged. Do you expect them all just to show up at a designated time and wing it? |
